Saturday Highlights: Dogs win decisively

 

NIAGARA 5 BARRIE 1
The Niagara IceDogs continue to stay involved in the Central Division as veteran captain Ryan Mantha (8) had a goal and two assists in a 5-1 road victory in Barrie. Niagara’s second straight win also featured markers from Ben Jones (6), Oliver Castleman (7), Akil Thomas (6) and Matthew Philip (7). Niagara outshot Barrie 34-29, holding the Colts to 1-for-10 on the power play while improving to 6-1-1-2 on the season against Central Division opponents. Cordell James (12) scored the lone goal for Barrie as Stephen Dhillon made 28 saves for Niagara. The IceDogs remain within five points of first place North Bay in the Central.

HAMILTON 3 FLINT 2 SO
Kaden Fulcher was a difference-maker, turning aside 30 shots before denying both shootout opponents he faced as the Hamilton Bulldogs prevailed 3-2 over visiting Flint. The Bulldogs put an end to a three game skid, getting goals from Trent Fox (5) and Luke Kutkevicius (2) before Matthew Strome and Michael Cramarossa both scored in the shootout. Nicholas Caamano (12) and Jacob Collins (1) had goals for Flint. Hamilton improves to 13-9-3-0, five points back of first place Oshawa in the East Division.

OTTAWA 5 SARNIA 3
Draft eligible forward Sasha Chmelevski (14) scored the game winner with 6:40 to go in the third period as the Ottawa 67’s got past the Sarnia Sting 5-3 on home ice. Olivier Lafreniere stopped 43 of the 46 shots he faced while Carter Robertson (1), Artur Tyanulin (10), Tye Felhaber (9) and Patrick White (10) also scored. The 67’s won despite being outshot 46-32 as Sarnia had goals from Troy Lajeunesse (8), Adam Ruzicka (9) and Ryan McGregor (7). Ottawa’s win brings them back to .500 at 12-12-2-0, placing them third in the East Division.

LONDON 5 GUELPH 3
Detroit Red Wings prospect Givani Smith (12, 13, 14) headlined Todd Bertuzzi jersey retirement day in Guelph with a hat-trick, bu the London Knights would ultimately come away as victors in a 5-3 road win. The Knights rallied from a 3-1 deficit as Robert Thomas (9) and Adrian Carbonara (5) scored in the final minute of the second period before Olli Juolevi (5) and Cliff Pu (18) added third period markers to secure the win. Janne Kuokkanen (13) also scored for the Knights, who outshot Guelph 35-26. London improves to a league-leading 18-3-2-2.

ERIE 4 NORTH BAY 2
The Erie Otters limited the North Bay Battalion to just 11 shots, dominating the faceoff circle to a tune of 74.5% (41-for-55) to double up the Troops 4-2 on home ice. Alex DeBrincat (22, 23) had two goals and an assist while Arizona Coyotes prospect Dylan Strome recorded three helpers, surpassing Connor McDavid for the most assists in Otters history with 191. Kyle Pettit (13) and Ivan Lodnia (11) also scored as the Otters outshot the Troops 14-1 in the third period. Brett McKenzie (13) and Jacob Ball (3) scored for North Bay while Bradley Van Schubert, who was with the club this weekend as a result of the OHL’s emergency goaltender protocol, made 16 saves in a relief appearance. Erie’s third straight win sees them improve to 18-5-2-0.

OWEN SOUND 5 MISSISSAUGA 3
Jonah Gadjovich (8) scored once and had three assists to lead the Owen Sound Attack past the visiting Mississauga Steelheads 5-3. Nick Suzuki (16) scored in a fifth straight game while Matthew Struthers (3), Jacob Friend (1) and Kevin Hancock (8) also converted. Owen Sound’s third straight win saw them overcome an early 2-0 deficit as Michael McNiven made 29 saves. Mississauga’s sixth straight defeat featured goals from Michael McLeod (5), Aidan McFarland (6) and Brendan Harrogate (9). The Attack are now 15-11-1-0, sitting fourth in the Midwest Division.

KITCHENER 4 SAGINAW 1
Dawson Carty made 38 saves as the Kitchener Rangers defeated the Saginaw Spirit 4-1 on the road. Joseph Garreffa (7) and Greg Meireles (7) each had a goal and an assist while Mason Kohn (5) and Adam Mascherin (17) also scored. Jeremy Bracco extended his point streak to 22 games with an assist in the win as the Rangers prevailed despite being outshot 39-27. Max Grondin (2) scored the lone goal for the Spirit. The Rangers are now 16-8-0-1 and sit in third place in the Midwest Division.GAME CENTRE
