Petes acquire veteran Soto from Frontenacs
The Peterborough Petes announced a Thursday trade, acquiring 2005-born overage candidate Matthew Soto from the Kingston Frontenacs in exchange for three draft picks, sending Sarnia’s third round pick in 2027, Oshawa’s fifth round pick in 2027 and Peterborough’s fifth round pick in 2029 the other way.
Soto, from Oakville, Ont., comes off a 2024-25 season that included 18 goals, 16 assists and 34 points over 58 games while taking just four minutes in penalties. The former fifth overall pick of the 2021 OHL Priority Selection played four seasons in Kingston, recording 64 goals, 93 assists and 157 points over 231 regular season games.
“We’re very excited to add Matthew Soto to our group as we prepare for the new season,” noted Petes general manager Mike Oke. “Matthew is a player who will bring a lot of experience to our team, having played in over 230 games during his career in Kingston. We’re looking forward to seeing him take the ice at training camp later this year.”
Soto, who attended training camp with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2023, led Kingston offensively during the 2023-24 campaign, recording career highs with 25 goals, 31 assists and 56 points.
“I’m excited and grateful to get an opportunity to play for the Peterborough Petes,” said Soto. “I look forward to connecting with my teammates and getting to play in front of the amazing fans at the PMC next season.”
Soto is the latest Frontenac on the move after fellow 2005-born forward Ethan Miedema was dealt to the Guelph Storm earlier in the week as GM Kory Cooper restocks the club’s draft pick cupboard.
