OHL Weekend Notebook: December 17, 2019
The OHL Weekend Notebook recaps the weekend that was with news, information and interesting facts from both on and off the ice. Here are 10 of the leading stories from this past weekend.
67’s earn 10th straight victory
The red hot Ottawa 67’s had only one game lined up for this past weekend, but it proved to be another success, as they dominated the Barrie Colts 7-2 with five unanswered goals for a 10th straight win. The 10-game run is Ottawa’s longest since the 1999-2000 season. Point streaks for Marco Rossi and Joseph Garreffa carried over to their 12th game, with a collective 30 points (13-17-30) to Rossi’s name and 26 points earned for overager Garreffa (12-14-26). Rossi continues to lead all OHL skaters in assists with an accumulative 38 in his 56-point total. NHL Draft prospect Jack Quinn got on the board twice for his 17th and 18th goals on the year, and three helpers from veteran blueliner Noel Hoefenmayer boosted his point total to an impressive 41 (12-29-41) as the OHL’s current leading D-man. In other 67’s news, defenceman Kevin Bahl was part of an NHL trade on Monday, going from the Arizona Coyotes to the New Jersey Devils in a deal that saw former OHL star Taylor Hall head the other way. Bahl joins 67’s teammates Mitchell Hoelscher, Nikita Okhotyuk and Graeme Clarke in the Devils system.

Rangers keep rolling
That Kitchener Rangers win streak lived to see its ninth game with high-scoring victories over the Hamilton Bulldogs and Guelph Storm. Rangers netminder and L.A. Kings prospect Jacob Ingham earned the title of OHL ‘On the Run’ Player of the Week with a 2-0 record, 0.50 goals-against average, .984 save percentage and shutout over the London Knights on Tuesday, the fourth of his career. The Blueshirts saw nine goals from nine different scorers, including seven unanswered against the Bulldogs on Friday in a 9-6 decision, before putting six goals on the Storm the following afternoon. Second-year defender and 2020 NHL Draft prospect Donovan Sebrango was named the club’s first star on Friday after a three-point performance (1-2-3), and Florida Panthers draft pick Greg Meireles put up a season-high four points that included a hat-trick in their 6-1 win.

Saginaw in high spirits after western sweep
The Saginaw Spirit wrapped up a Western Conference weekend with three wins in the bag, including two straight victories over their I-75 counterpart Flint Firebirds in a home-and-home. New York Islanders prospect Cole Coskey saw a couple of historical milestones as he became the first Spirit player to register game winning goals on back-to-back nights, and also set a new club record for games played with 271 in his fifth year with the team. The overager saw four points in his last three games (3-1-4), reaching goal number 17 on the season and boosting his point total to 39 (17-22-39). NHL Draft pick Cole Perfetti also boasted a four-point weekend (2-2-4), scoring back-to-back goals in the opening 20 of his team’s 5-3 home win against Flint on Saturday.

High-scoring Sting earn third straight win
The Sarnia Sting picked up all four points on the road over the weekend, earning the win in a 5-3 matchup over the London Knights and a tightly-fought 7-6 battle against Mississauga. The Sting scored four unanswered goals in London to get things rolling and handed out first star honours to Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Eric Hjorth for a two-point (1-1-2) night. Fifth-year OHLer and Sting captain Ryan McGregor came up big the following afternoon with a five-point showing (1-4-5), third-year Anthony Tabak ended up on the scoresheet four times (2-2-4), and 2020 NHL Draft hopeful Jacob Perreault completed a hat-trick with just a minute left on the clock.

First place Petes continue to come up big
The Peterborough Petes banked two more wins over the weekend over a couple of fellow East Division opponents. The Petes rallied past the Hamilton Bulldogs 7-4 on Thursday night before edging the Oshawa Generals 3-2 the following evening. The Petes currently boast a three-game win streak and an 8-1-0-1 record in their last 10 games. Their league-leading season record of 23-7-1-1 and 48 points has them two points above the second-best Ottawa 67’s, who are hot on their tails. The Petes, perhaps unexpectedly, slotted standout goaltender Hunter Jones back into their lineup after he was cut from Canada’s National Junior Team. They’ll be without forward Nick Robertson as he attends the U.S. National Junior Camp.

McTavish puts up five-goal weekend
In his continued success near the top of the OHL rookie scoring race, Mason McTavish had a weekend for the books with five goals in two Petes victories over the weekend. The 16-year-old notched his first career OHL hat-trick on Thursday, scoring twice in the first period before adding one late in the third to close out the Petes’ scoring. Friday’s action saw two more for McTavish at the 16-minute marks of the first and second that included the game-winner in a 3-2 edge. Sunday’s performance brought him to goal number 20 on the year, which makes him the first CHL rookie to reach the milestone in 2019-20.

A weekend of firsts for Attack rookies on northern swing
Three Owen Sound Attack rookies found the back of the net for the first time over the course of the weekend. Sam Sedley’s first came just over two and a half minutes into his team’s 4-2 loss at the hands of the Soo Greyhounds Friday night, while teammate Kaleb Lawrence scored his first marker the following night as the Attack shut out the Wolves 4-0. The Attack saw another milestone when rookie goaltender Nick Chenard recorded his first career shutout in the same game. On Sunday afternoon, Joshua Samanski scored his first OHL goal, providing the second of three unanswered goals in a 3-1 comeback win over the North Bay Battalion.

Otters see newfound success on the road
The Erie Otters claimed victory in two straight road games for the first time all season, skating past the Sudbury Wolves 7-4 on Friday night and past the Soo Greyhounds in a 5-2 tilt Sunday afternoon. In doing so, the Otters ended their six-game losing skid and will now head into the holiday break with a 13-11-2-6 record. Rookie Connor Lockhart had an impressive showing with four points on the weekend, including three helpers in Saturday’s 7-4 matchup. Third-year Otter Kurtis Henry also put up four points (2-2-4). Maxim Golod and Danial Singer put up two points each in Sunday’s win. Though they remain in the Midwest’s fifth place spot with 34 points, it’s anyone race as only four points separate them from the second place London Knights.

Generals get back in the win column
After five straight losses stemming from Nov. 28, the Oshawa Generals finally found their groove on Sunday night as they skated past the Guelph Storm in a 5-2 contest. Goals from top scorer Brett Neumann and Florida Panthers pick Serron Noel weren’t enough to secure a win over the first place Peterborough Petes on Friday, but a five-goal surge over the Guelph Storm got the job done on Sunday. Noel picked up three goals through both weekend games, and captain Kyle MacLean registered three assists in his 250th game with the Gens.

Knights, Colts finish weekend winless
After being shut out 4-0 by the Kitchener Rangers last Tuesday, the London Knights then struggled to find a win over the weekend, falling to the West Division Sarnia Sting and Windsor Spitfires. London defender and San Jose Sharks prospect Ryan Merkley put up a solid effort with six points (1-5-6) over the last two games. Merkley sits second among all OHL defencemen with a point total of 37 (7-30-37), behind Ottawa’s Noel Hoefenmayer. The Knights will look to get back on track ahead of the holiday break in a clash with the North Bay Battalion this Thursday and a visit to Sudbury the next night.
The Barrie Colts also came up winless after dropping matches to the Kingston Frontenacs and Ottawa 67’s. The club hasn’t won since Nov. 30, having dropped their last five games.
Tough loss tonight on the road.
