The OHL Weekend Notebook recaps the weekend that was with news, information and interesting facts from both on and off the ice.
Fronts take first
The Kingston Frontenacs move to the top of the OHL standings, extending their winning streak to eight games. Boasting a 17-5-3-0 record, the Fronts won all three games this weekend, defeating Hamilton 6-5 on Friday, Niagara 5-2 on Saturday, and Mississauga 5-3 on Sunday. The Fronts featured two of the week’s most productive players in Jordan Frasca and OHL Player of the Week Lucas Edmonds. Frasca recorded back to back hat tricks in under 24 hours, earning seven goals and nine points in just three games, while Edmonds posted five points (1-4–5) on Sunday to take over the OHL scoring lead with 52 points (17-35–52) over 25 games. The Fronts also got a boost with the return of Philadelphia Flyers prospect Zayde Wisdom, who made his season debut on Sunday.

Attack pull off back-to-back comebacks in Flint
Owen Sound travelled to Flint on the weekend, securing back-to-back third period comeback wins. Defeating the Firebirds 8-4 on Friday, and 4-3 on Saturday, the Attack improved their record to 12-10-1-2 for third in the Midwest Division. Down 4-1 in Friday night’s game, Owen Sound scored seven unanswered goals in the latter half of regulation, with Ethan Burroughs and Servac Petrovsky each scoring twice. Flint’s Riley Piercey extended his goal-scoring streak to six games on Saturday and now has points in 10 straight for Flint. William Portokalis and Cedrick Guindon would score third period goals as the Bears battled back from down 3-2. Nick Chenard made 26 saves, securing the Attack’s second win of the weekend.

Duelling D’Amatos
The Flint Firebirds hosted the Erie Otters on Wednesday night where brothers Daniel and Luca D’Amato duelled it out for a combination of five goals and two assists as the Firebirds took the win. Luca was named first star of the game, scoring the game winner in the third period. Daniel D’Amato recorded his first career OHL hat trick, becoming the first Otters player to score two shorthanded goals in one game since Greg McKegg on Oct. 2, 2010 against London. Outshooting Erie 44-26, Flint’s nine goals became a new all-time club mark on home ice.

Guelph storms to their 1000th win
Guelph comes off of a two-game weekend, defeating Saginaw 5-3 on Friday, and London 4-0 on Saturday. Remaining undefeated against the Knights this season, Owen Bennett made 27 saves on Saturday for his second shutout of the year, backstopping the Storm to their 1000th win in club history. Joining the Toronto Marlboros, the Storm franchise becomes the first in League history to have two clubs with 1000 career wins. Vegas Golden Knights prospect, Daniil Chayka got on the board for Guelph on Saturday with one goal and two assists. The Storm outshot the Knights 39-27 as Mathias Onuska made his first start of the season for London stopping 35 shots. Guelph improves their record to 16-8-1-1, now trailing the first place Knights by only one point in the Midwest Division.

Diaco’s streak continues
Hamilton Bulldogs forward George Diaco owns the OHL’s longest active point streak, one that has spanned 15 games dating back to Nov. 6th. The ‘Dogs went 2-1 last week, with Diaco keeping his current trend in motion with assists on Wednesday and Friday before a goal and a helper in Saturday’s 8-3 road win over the Ottawa 67’s. Diaco has 33 points (11-22–33) through 26 games.

Medina is back
Improving to 3-0 since returning from injury, Xavier Medina stopped 21 out of 22 shots on Friday to get the 4-1 win against London. The Windsor goalie also had a 31-save performance on Saturday against Kitchener, winning 2-1. The Spitfires made a third period comeback on Saturday, letting the teddy bears fly in their annual Teddy Bear Toss game. Windsor is on a four-game slide (12-8-2-2), now within one point of the first place Soo Greyhounds in the West Division.

Rehkopf’s rookie hat trick
Kitchener Rangers rookie forward Carson Rehkopf scored his first OHL hat trick on Friday as the Rangers scored a season-high nine goals, defeating Sarnia 9-1. The 16-year-old has scored six goals in his last five games (7-5–12). The scoring continued as Los Angeles Kings prospect Francesco Pinelli also finished with four points (2-2–4) while Mitchell Martin (1-2–3) and Declan McDonnell (1-2–3) each had three.

Beck on the board
A big weekend of firsts, Mississauga Steelheads rookie Owen Beck scored his first OHL hat trick on Friday night as the 2022 NHL Draft prospect led the Steelheads to their fourth consecutive win. The Trout split their weekend, defeating Niagara 9-1 on Friday before falling to Kingston 5-3 on Sunday. Mississauga sits three points back of the first place Battalion in the Central Division with a 15-7-1-1 record.

Guzda comes up big, Williamson climbs coaching ranks
Barrie comes off a two-game weekend against North Bay, winning 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday, and 1-0 on Sunday behind a 26-save shutout by Mack Guzda. Edmonton Oilers prospect Matvey Petrov scored twice for the Battalion in Saturday’s matchup, but OHL Goaltender of the Week Guzda would earn first star honours, making 32 saves before going 4-for-4 in the shootout. Jacob Frasca scored the shootout winner for the Colts, securing their fourth straight win, putting an end to North Bay’s three-game winning streak. With his 469th career OHL coaching win, Colts head coach and GM Marty Williamson surpassed Mike Vellucci to climb to 10th on the OHL’s all-time list. New York Rangers prospect Evan Vierling scored the third period game winner shorthanded on Sunday as Barrie improved to 13-7-2-0.

Erie breaks the losing streak
Vancouver Canucks prospect Connor Lockhart’s first OHL hat trick was overshadowed by a three-goal third period from the Saginaw Spirit on Saturday, as the Otters fell by a score of 5-3. 2022 NHL Draft blueline prospect Pavel Mintyukov had a season-high three points (1-2–3) for Saginaw. Erie quickly turned around, breaking their four-game losing streak after making a third period comeback, defeating Sarnia 4-3 on Sunday. Erie outshot Sarnia 39-22, with the rookie duo of Carey Terrance and Taeo Artichuk coming together for the game winner. The Otters improve to 7-11-1-1.
