OHL Officials Ride to Conquer Cancer
The Ontario Hockey League was well represented out on the streets supporting a worthy cause over the weekend in the 11th annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer.
On June 9-10, members of the OHL’s officiating community including past and present staff, managers, referees, and linesmen, traded their whistles for wheels to cycle over 200km round-trip between Toronto and Niagara Falls after raising over $61,000 as a team for the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.
‘OHL Team 21’ was represented by 18 riders in total including captains Conrad Hache and Darcy Burchell, along with Shandor Alphonso, Ken Cox, Greg Devorski, Brady Fagan, Jason Faist, Scott Ferguson, Mike Hamilton, Chris Holmstead, Scott Lawson, Michael Marley, Kevin McArthur, Dustin McCrank, Kendrick Nicholson, Scott Oakman, Justin Tang, and Don Van Massenhoven.
The team was riding in honour of longtime Officiating Supervisor Ken Bodendistel who passed away in November, 2013, at the age of 73 after a courageous battle with cancer. The team proudly sported specially designed helmet covers donated by M2 Services Group along with their black and white stripes throughout the ride displayed on jerseys donated by Northern Alarm Protection that were designed for the event including the words “Whistles to Wheels” across the chest in addition to the OHL logo and a “KB” patch stitched on the shoulder.
A total of 4,555 riders participated in this year’s event raising over $18.3 million to support Personalized Cancer Medicine research, treatment advances, education and new standards of care at The Princess Margaret, across Ontario and around the world.
This marks the second time the OHL’s officiating community has participated in this event, last riding in June, 2014, raising in excess of $54,000.
