OHL Mourns the Loss of Henri Richard

The Ontario Hockey League is saddened by the loss of former Montreal Canadiens captain and Hockey Hall of Fame inductee Henri Richard who passed away on Friday at the age of 84.

Richard spent his entire 20-year NHL career with the Canadiens and joins Jean Béliveau as one of just two players to ever accomplish the feat.

Prior to his decorated NHL career, Richard got his start with the Montreal Junior Canadiens of the Quebec Provincial Junior A Hockey League, putting up 238 points (116-122–238) over three seasons from 1952-55.

He broke into the NHL during the 1955-56 season, winning his first of an NHL record 11 Stanley Cup championships. He’s one of 12 players on the Canadiens to have been a member of five consecutive Stanley Cup-winning teams, an NHL record.

Richard racked up 358 goals, 688 assists and 1046 points over a 1256-game career that spanned from 1955-75. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979. In 2017, Richard was named one of the “100 Greatest NHL Players” in history as part of the League’s centennial festivities.

He is survived by his beloved wife Lise, his children Michele, Gilles, Denis, Marie-France and Nathalie, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
