OHL graduates recognized with 2023-24 U SPORTS year-end awards
Several OHL graduates were recognized with year-end awards at the U SPORTS Awards Ceremony held in Toronto on Wednesday. Players were recognized ahead of the U SPORTS men’s hockey national championships taking place at Toronto Metropolitan University beginning Thursday afternoon.
Former Saginaw Spirit forward Brady Gilmour took home Most Sportsmanlike Player honours while five others were named U SPORTS All-Canadians following impressive seasons on the ice.
R.W. Pugh Trophy (Most Sportsmanlike Player) – Brady Gilmour, UNB Reds
In his fourth season with the UNB Reds, Saginaw Spirit graduate Brady Gilmour earned the R.W. Pugh Trophy as the most sportsmanlike player in U SPORTS men’s hockey.
The Master of Business Administration student from Grafton, Ont., finished fourth in the conference in scoring with 12 goals and 29 assists. He played in all of the Reds 30 regular season games, recording just eight minutes in penalties.
Gilmour’s efforts helped UNB to a 30-0 regular season record and the school’s 16th consecutive AUS regular season title.
A former seventh round pick of the Detroit Red Wings in 2017, Gilmour played four seasons in Saginaw from 2015-19, recording 57 goals, 77 assists and 134 points over 231 regular season games.

Second Team:
F – Jacob Roach (Brock Badgers/Guelph Storm) – 26 GP, 16G, 24A, 40 PTS.
F – Matthew Struthers (StFX X-Men/Owen Sound, North Bay) – 30 GP, 17G, 29A, 46 PTS.
All-Rookie Team:
F – Alec Bélanger (Dalhousie Tigers/Kingston, Ottawa) – 25 GP, 16G, 7A, 23 PTS.
D – Charlie Callaghan (StFX X-Men/Mississauga Steelheads) – 28 GP, 5G, 16A, 21 PTS.
The OHL continues to produce student-athletes that move on to both professional and U SPORTS men’s hockey endeavours.
A total of 333 graduates utilized their OHL Scholarship at post-secondary institutions across North America during the 2022-23 academic year, with a total contribution by teams of over $3.6 million. Over the past 10 seasons, OHL Scholarship payments have totalled more than $25 million.
A total of 228 OHL Alumni were included on U SPORTS men’s hockey rosters to open the 2023-24 season.
