OHL Appoints Brodie Barrick as Director of Player Recruitment and Player Support Services
Toronto, Ont. – The Ontario Hockey League today announced the appointment of Brodie Barrick as its Director of Player Recruitment and Player Support Services.
A 28-year-old originally from Welland, Ont., Barrick will be responsible for developing and implementing League recruitment strategy and activities, and liaising with U16 AAA teams across Ontario and parts of the United States. He will work closely with U16 AAA players and families to provide them with information and education regarding the opportunities the OHL provides.
Barrick will also oversee the League’s various Player Support Services initiatives including the Canadian Mental Health Association Talk Today program and the OHL Onside program that educates players in the area of respect for women. He’ll also work with member teams in the utilization of League-provided player support tools such as the HONE App that equips clubs with the ability to effectively engage players in matters of communication and mental health.
Barrick will also help further relationships with OHL Alumni and coordinate annual events that will provide opportunities for the League to stay connected with its vast community of former players pursuing professional careers both in and outside of the game.
“Growing up as a kid in Ontario, I always dreamed of playing in the Ontario Hockey League,” said Barrick. “It’s quite a full circle moment being back in the league in a full-time capacity and I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to work with our current and future players. Being able to play in the OHL and utilize my OHL Scholarship Package to get an education after playing was more than I ever expected to get out of the game of hockey. Looking back on my time in the league, all of the skills I have learned in hockey, academics, and professionally, stem from my time playing in the OHL. I am excited to work with the next generation of players and their families as they prepare for their future to play in the OHL.”
Originally a seventh-round pick of the Sarnia Sting in the 2007 OHL Priority Selection, Barrick played his first season of junior eligibility with the Pittsburgh Hornets 18U AAA program before a season with the Carleton Place Canadians of the CCHL in 2011-12. He joined the Sting as an 18-year-old in 2012-13 and played two OHL seasons in Sarnia before spending the 2014-15 campaign with the Summerside Western Capitals of the MJAHL. Barrick utilized his OHL Scholarship to attend Ryerson University (now Toronto Metropolitan University) where he played parts of two seasons with the men’s hockey program in 2016-17 and 2017-18.
Barrick is a graduate of Toronto Metropolitan’s Arts & Contemporary Studies program with a Major in Philosophy and Minors in Law, Criminology and Marketing. He also has a Masters of Arts in Leadership (MA) from the University of Guelph’s Lang School of Business, where he graduated in 2022. Barrick joins the League after working most recently as an Alumni Engagement Officer at York University.
“We are excited to welcome Brodie back to the OHL in this role,” said OHL Commissioner David Branch. “He will serve as an excellent resource for prospective OHL players and families while also ensuring that the players currently in our League are provided all of the resources offered by our various player support programs. Brodie will also draw upon his experience as both an OHL and U SPORTS student athlete to connect with players in all stages of their development as they seek to maximize their potential both on and off the ice.”
The position was previously held by Kyle Pereira for parts of four seasons before he departed to pursue a career in business opportunities outside of hockey.
