McDavid, Schaefer headline historic night for Erie Otters alumni

Thursday night proved to be a landmark evening for former Erie Otters, as both Matthew Schaefer and Connor McDavid etched their names into the NHL record books.

Schaefer, the first overall pick in last year’s NHL Entry Draft, scored his 17th and 18th goals of the season, setting the record for the most goals by an 18-year-old defenseman in NHL history.

What made the moment even more remarkable was how quickly it unfolded. Late in the second period against the Montreal Canadiens, the New York Islanders blueliner got on the board to pull his team within one. Then, just 55 seconds later, he struck again, wiring a wrist shot past Canadiens goaltender Sam Montembeault to tie the game at two. The back-to-back markers in under a minute made the record-breaking sequence one of the more dramatic individual moments of the season.

It’s just the latest accomplishment in what has been a truly remarkable rookie campaign for the young blueliner.

Schaefer announced himself to the league immediately, becoming the youngest defenseman in NHL history, at just 18 years and 34 days old, to record a point in his debut. He then became the second-youngest defenseman to score a goal, doing so in just his second NHL game. He kept the momentum going from there, recording at least a point in each of his first six career games, tying Marek Zidlicky of the Nashville Predators for the longest such streak by a rookie defenseman in NHL history, a run that earned him Rookie of the Month honours for October.

He also holds the distinction of being the youngest defenseman ever to score more than once in a single game, surpassing a benchmark previously held by the legendary Bobby Orr.

Meanwhile, later that night, McDavid – in just his second game back following the Olympics where he was named tournament MVP – continued his own march through the history books.

The Edmonton Oilers captain picked up an assist on Leon Draisaitl’s goal in the third period, a helper that pushed McDavid into rare territory. He became just the third player in NHL history to record nine or more 100-point seasons. The two players ahead of him are two of the greatest to ever play the game: Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux.

The assist also made McDavid the first player in the league to reach 100 points this season, a milestone that has become almost routine for the generational talent.

In 11 NHL career seasons, McDavid has fallen short of 100 points only twice – once during his rookie year, when an injury limited him to just 45 games, and again during the COVID-19 shortened 2019-2020 season. Every other full season, without exception, he has eclipsed the century mark.

Two players. Two historic performances. One familiar home rink. Thursday night was a powerful reminder of the enduring strength of the Otters’ talent pipeline and the impact it continues to have on the game.
