Greyhounds host Greyhounds Guardians Charity Game in partnership with Sault Ste. Marie Special Olympics Northeastern District
The first annual Greyhounds Guardians charity hockey game took place on Wednesday, and it was a memorable evening filled with camaraderie and the spirit of community! The event saw the Soo Greyhounds partner with Sault Ste. Marie Special Olympics Northeastern District for an unforgettable game experience at the GFL Memorial Gardens.
The game featured players from the Greyhounds who were split into two teams, joined by athletes from Special Olympics to round out the rosters. The event was a reflection of the Greyhounds’ commitment to their community, completed with referees, in-game music, and public address announcements, mimicking the feel of an OHL game.
The charity game marked the culmination of the Greyhounds Guardians program, a new initiative created by Head Coach John Dean. The program ran throughout the season, featuring seven practices and culminating in Wednesday’s game. Over the course of these sessions, players and coaches from the Greyhounds worked closely with local special needs athletes, teaching them hockey skills, providing equipment, and fostering strong relationships between the athletes and the team. Despite the team’s demanding schedule and travel, Dean and a dedicated group of players made sure to prioritize these weekly practices, ensuring a lasting impact on the participants.
The Greyhounds Guardians program isn’t just about hockey – it’s about making meaningful connections within the community. This season’s participants, ranging from 10 to 63 years old, were chosen based on ability, economic background, and geographical location, ensuring the program was as inclusive as possible. Through the program, both typical and atypical athletes had the opportunity to learn and expand their hockey skills, and the experience was just as rewarding for the Greyhounds players and coaches.
It was an experience all participants will never forget!
