George earns second shutout as Canada blanks Germany
Canada bounced back from their previous loss to Latvia with a commanding 3-0 victory over Germany at the World Junior Hockey Championship on Sunday at the Canadian Tire Centre in Kanata.
Philadelphia Flyers prospect Oliver Bonk of the London Knights opened the scoring on the power play at 9:40 of the first period. After a scoreless second frame, Canada surged in the third, sealing the win with goals from Caden Price and Mathieu Cataford.
The Canadians outshot Germany 36-25 in the tightly contested matchup.
Owen Sound Attack goaltender Carter George delivered another stellar performance, earning his second consecutive shutout with 25 saves. The Los Angeles Kings prospect became the seventh Canadian netminder to record multiple shutouts in tournament history.
The victory sets up a high-stakes showdown for Canada against the United States at 7:30 p.m. ET on New Year’s Eve, with first place in their group on the line. Excitement for the matchup is building, fuelled by Team USA’s 4-3 overtime loss to Finland on Sunday afternoon.
In Group A of the World Junior Hockey Championship, all teams except Germany have secured at least one win.
