Generals in the hunt for record 14th OHL Championship

The Oshawa Generals are headed to the 2020 OHL Playoffs.

A Niagara IceDogs loss on Thursday night put the Generals out of reach and into the playoff tree with their 28-18-4-4 record and 64 points, good for fourth in the Eastern Conference standings. They’ve currently got a seven-point cushion ahead of fifth place Barrie for home ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

The Generals got off to a 9-0 start to the season and, though they’ve had some bouts of inconsistency along the way, have proven to be a contender in the Eastern Conference behind the leadership of captain Kyle MacLean. Overage centre Brett Neumann has been among the OHL’s biggest scoring threats with 41 goals and 76 points through 54 games.

The big deadline addition of Philip Tomasino has paid dividends for Oshawa as the Nashville Predators first round pick was named the OHL’s Player of the Month for January. Tomasino has 95 points (38-57–95) through 54 contests, good for third in the League.

A pair of younger players in 2020 NHL Draft prospect Ty Tullio and 2019 first round OHL Priority Selection choice Brett Harrison have also provided scoring punch. Tullio joins Montreal Canadiens pick Allan McShane with 62 points up front while Harrison’s 19 goals are the most by a Generals’ 16-year-old rookie since Boone Jenner in 2009-10.

Oshawa has won a record 13 OHL Championships along with five Memorial Cup titles, last hoisting the CHL’s national prize on Anthony Cirelli‘s overtime winner in 2015.
