Frontenacs clinch East Division title

After an exciting 6-2 home ice victory over the London Knights on Friday, the Kingston Frontenacs had a little help from the Sudbury Wolves in securing their second East Division title in franchise history.

The Wolves doubled up the Peterborough Petes 6-3 on Saturday, mathematically securing Kingston’s first East Division title since the 1994-95 season as the 38-15-2-2 Frontenacs will enter the 2016 OHL Playoffs as one of the top two seeds in the Eastern Conference.

Kingston recently entered the BMO CHL Top 10 Rankings for the second time this season on Wednesday. A run of eight wins over their past 10 games has them flying high, currently holding a six point lead over second place Barrie in the Eastern Conference.

The Fronts lock up the Leyden Trophy awarded to the winner of the East Division for the second time in franchise history following their last title in 1995 with a team that went 40-19-7-0 and included such prominent talent as CHL Player of the Year David Ling, Frontenacs all-time leading scorer Keli Corpse and former NHL forwards Chad Kilger and Brett Lindros.

Two players on the 2015-16 Frontenacs will return to the playoffs as East Division Champs for a third straight year as Michael Dal Colle and Stephen Desrocher were both a part of the 2015 MasterCard Memorial Cup champion Oshawa Generals who captured East Division supremacy in each of the past two seasons.

The Leyden Trophy was first presented in the 1975-76 season when the OHL was split into divisions with the expansion of the League to 12 teams. The award originated in recognition of Matt Leyden for his contribution to Junior hockey in Ontario.

The Frontenacs have made several playoff appearances in recent years but have failed to win a playoff series since 1998. This group of Fronts is looking to change that this spring in their quest to bring the franchise its first ever OHL Championship.

The 2016 OHL Playoffs get underway after the season wraps up on Sunday March 20.
