Friday Highlights: Byfield’s milestone marker headlines Wolves first win
SUDBURY 4, GUELPH 2
Quinton Byfield’s first career OHL goal was a thing of beauty as the first overall pick of the 2018 OHL Priority Selection dazzled with a breakaway tally to cap a 4-2 Sudbury Wolves victory in Guelph. After falling behind 2-0, Shane Bulitka, Liam Ross and Drake Pilon preceded Byfield’s milestone marker as Sudbury outshot Guelph 29-22 in the win. Byfield, Ross and Pilon all finished with a goal and an assist while goaltender Jake McGrath made 20 saves for the win. Nate Schnarr and Liam Hawel scored for the Storm in their home opener as they went 2-for-3 on the power play.

OTTAWA 4, MISSISSAUGA 3 – OT
After battling thick fog in the first half of action, the Ottawa 67’s and Mississauga Steelheads treated fans on hand in the nation’s capital to quite a game. Ottawa veteran Austen Keating put an end to things 55 seconds into overtime on assists from Tye Felhaber and Mitchell Hoelscher as the Barber Poles took their home opener by a score of 4-3. The two sides swapped goals in a see-saw affair as the Steelheads outshot the 67′ 34-24. Felhaber, Hoelscher and Graeme Clarke also scored for Ottawa while Filip Reisnecker and James Hardie both scored firsts for the Steelheads. Recently acquired forward Richard Whittaker scored his first goal in Mississauga blue. Ottawa netminder Cedrick Andree made 31 saves in the victory.

KINGSTON 5, OSHAWA 2
Dallas Stars prospect Jason Robertson is well on his way to another 40+ goal season, netting the first hat-trick of #OHLOpeningWeek as the Kingston Frontenacs defeated the East Division rival Oshawa Generals 5-2 on home ice. Brett Neumann pitched in with a goal and two assists while newcomer Ian Derungs scored his first OHL goal and rookie defender Jacob Murray picked up his first career point with an assist. Brendan Bonello bounced back from a Thursday night loss, turning aside 26 of 28 shots that came his way to earn his first win of the season. Serron Noel and Domenico Comisso scored in the loss for Oshawa.

NORTH BAY 7, HAMILTON 5
The goals kept coming at the Memorial Gardens but when all was said and done, the hometown Battalion fired the last salvo in a 7-5 win over the defending champion Hamilton Bulldogs. Adam McMaster and Mathew Struthers both got their seasons off on the right foot with two goals and an assist each. Daniel Walker, Cameron Peters and Nick King also lit the lamp in front of a 28-save performance from Christian Propp. Hamilton’s Brandon Saigeon started his season with a bang, getting in on all five Bulldogs goals with two goals and three assists in the loss. Draft eligible winger Arthur Kaliyev picked up a pair of goals and an assist in his season debut.

LONDON 5, WINDSOR 2
Connor McMichael scored twice and added an assist as the London Knights prevailed in a hard-fought 5-2 win over visiting Windsor. Matvey Guskov picked up the first goal of his OHL career while Billy Moskal and Cole Tymkin added singles. Nathan Dunkley had three helpers on the night as London outshot Windsor 38-26. Michael DiPietro turned aside 33 shots, taking the loss in his season debut as Windsor had goals from Daniel D’Amico and Tyler Angle. London netminder Jordan Kooy turned away Windsor rookie Will Cuylle on a first period penalty shot.

KITCHENER 6, FLINT 2
After a relatively quiet first period, the Kitchener Rangers exploded for three goals in the second to take control and eventually defeat the visiting Flint Firebirds 6-2. Jonathan Yantsis and Joseph Garreffa each had two goals and an assist for the Rangers while Riley Damiani and Greg Meireles also tallied. Kitchener struck for six goals on 25 shots while Flint’s pair of goals came off the sticks of Hunter Holmes and Jack Wismer. Luke Richardson earned the win in goal for Kitchener, making 23 saves in the process.
