Former Ottawa 67’s forward Logan Couture to step away from NHL
San Jose Sharks captain Logan Couture announced Tuesday that he is stepping away from the National Hockey League due to a chronic pelvic injury that has sidelined him for nearly two years. The 36-year-old was limited to just six games during the 2023–24 season and has not played since.
Couture, who remains under contract with two years left on his eight-year deal, was selected ninth overall by the Sharks in the 2007 NHL Draft. The London, Ont. native spent his entire 14-plus season career in San Jose, recording 701 points (323 goals, 378 assists) in 933 games and finishing among the franchise’s all-time leaders in goals, assists, points, and playoff performances.
Before turning pro, Couture starred in the Ontario Hockey League with the Ottawa 67’s from 2005 to 2009, registering 111 goals, 176 assists and 287 points in 232 regular season games. Selected 12th overall by the 67’s in the 2005 OHL Priority Selection, the dynamic two-way centre was named to the OHL Second All-Rookie Team in 2006 and the OHL Second All-Star Team in 2007. He was also recognized throughout his junior career for his leadership and sportsmanship.
He appeared in the 2012 NHL All-Star Game, led all players in playoff assists and points during San Jose’s run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2016, and captured a gold medal with Team Canada at the World Cup of Hockey later that year. In 2019, he again led the NHL in playoff goals with 14.
Couture’s impact in San Jose extended far beyond the scoresheet. Known for his steady leadership, he continued to support the team off the ice throughout his recovery, attending games, mentoring teammates, and participating in team meetings. His commitment to the Sharks organization never wavered, even as he faced significant health challenges.
The OHL wishes Logan all the best in his future endeavors and congratulates him on an outstanding hockey career!
