Firebirds acquire McCue, Attack add Zurawski in Wednesday deal
With the OHL trade deadline approaching on Friday, the Flint Firebirds and Owen Sound Attack addressed a need up front with forwards Sam McCue and Cole Zurawski going separate ways.
Sitting sixth in the Western Conference with an experienced team, the 17-18-2-1 Firebirds add some sandpaper and a scoring touch with the addition of Toronto Maple Leafs prospect McCue. The 19-year-old from Sudbury, Ont. led the Attack with 18 goals over 35 games and also led the Bears with a plus-3 rating. The 6-foot-2, 191Ib. winger won an OHL championship with the Peterborough Petes in 2023.
“Sam is a guy who sets the example for the rest of the team,” said Firebirds head scout Mike Oliverio. “He takes and deals out punishment, grinds for every puck, and does what it takes to win games. He brings energy to his team every time he is on the ice, and uses it effectively when forechecking, battling in front of the net, and annoying his opponents. He is a player we have been interested in for some time and we are happy to add him to our group.”
The Firebirds acquired three draft picks along with a conditional selection in the move that saw them trade 16-year-old former sixth overall OHL Draft pick Cole Zurawski to Owen Sound.
“We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to acquire Cole,” said Attack GM Dale DeGray. “Not many times are you given the opportunity to trade for a top player in the previous Under-16 draft. “Cole is an elite forward who will add to our young group moving forward and in years to come. He is a smooth skating, smart offensive minded forward who has the ability to score goals and make plays.”
Zurawski is off to a productive start in the OHL, recording 15 points (6-9–15) over 32 games. The 6-foot, 181Ib. right wing recorded his first OHL multi-goal game on Oct. 25th in Guelph, finishing with two goals and an assist.
Zurawski is set to make his Attack debut on Wednesday night as the Bears play host to the Barrie Colts.
