Colts captain Beau Jelsma commits to Providence College
Barrie Colts captain and overage forward Beau Jelsma has announced his commitment to Providence College for the 2025-26 NCAA hockey season.
A native of Brownsville, Ont., Jelsma was selected 55th overall by the Colts in the third round of the 2020 OHL Priority Selection. The 5-foot-10 centreman spent all four seasons of his OHL career with Barrie, recording 241 points (115-126–241) over 259 career regular season games, the fourth-most games played in franchise history. He wore the ‘C’ for the Colts over the past two seasons.
Jelsma signed an amateur tryout (ATO) with the AHL’s Scranton Wilkes-Barre Penguins at the end of the 2023-24 season, where he tallied three points—one goal and two assists—in four games.
He also took part in the Pittsburgh Penguins’ 2024 Training Camp before returning to Barrie for the 2024-25 campaign. This past January, he was selected to compete in the inaugural Connor McDavid OHL Top Prospects Game.
Providence College, a private Roman Catholic institution based in Providence, Rhode Island, is home to the Friars men’s hockey team—an NCAA Division I program that competes in the Hockey East conference. Notable alumni include Noel Acciari, Brandon Tanev, and Mark Jankowski, all of whom continue to play in the NHL.
Jelsma is the second OHL player to join the Friars for the 2025-26 season, joining defenceman Donovan McCoy of the Sudbury Wolves.
