Barkey’s Buds making an impact in the London community
London Knights captain Denver Barkey has always been a fan favourite, but his contributions off the ice are earning him just as much admiration. This season, in partnership with The London Knights Official Fan Club, the Philadelphia Flyers prospect launched Barkey’s Buds, an initiative transforming the lives of local youth by making hockey accessible to all, regardless of financial barriers.

Reflecting on what inspired him to launch Barkey’s Buds at the start of the 2024-25 season, Barkey shared, “Coming here as a 16-year-old, I saw the incredible support from the London community and the fans. They’ve shown so much passion for us as players, and in my fourth year now and as captain, I wanted to give back to the community that has given me so much.”
“Hockey has taught me life lessons, created lifelong memories, and built relationships that shaped who I am. My goal is to give kids who might not be able to afford equipment or team fees the chance to fall in love with the game and create their own memories”, he added.
The 19-year-old forward’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. “The support from the community means a lot,” he said. “I’m not surprised though. This community has always rallied around us and the organization. At our last event, we collected over 1,000 pieces of lightly used equipment along with monetary donations. To see such an overwhelming response so early is amazing and really motivates me to keep going.”
Barkey’s Buds has already held two successful events this season, including one at London’s Source for Sports where fans had the chance to meet Barkey, get autographs, drop off lightly used equipment, and purchase t-shirts, with proceeds going to the foundation. “We’re also collaborating with the Hockey Hall of Fame for future donations,” Barkey added. “We’re planning to continue inviting families to games, provide tickets, and meet with the kids afterward.”
