Back on the Bench: Bill Houlder’s Return Fuels Battalion’s Playoff Push
For Bill Houlder, hockey has always been about resilience. Over the course of an 846-game NHL career and nearly a decade behind the bench with the North Bay Battalion, the veteran coach has experienced just about everything the game can throw at a person.
Still, even for someone as seasoned as Houlder, the start of 2026 delivered an unexpected challenge.
In late January, the Battalion assistant coach was injured in a snowmobile accident after colliding with a moose. It was a frightening and unusual incident that temporarily pulled him away from the bench during an important stretch of the season. But after weeks of recovery and staying connected with the team remotely, Houlder made his return to the Battalion bench on March 5.
“It was awesome,” Houlder said of the support he received during his recovery. “I had a lot of people reach out to me. Obviously, it was kind of a freak thing. The organization has been super supportive in letting me heal and come back.”
Even while sidelined physically, Houlder never truly stepped away from the team. From afar, he remained actively involved in the coaching process, reviewing video and staying connected with the staff as the Battalion pushed toward a postseason berth.
Now back behind the bench, he has quickly shifted his focus to preparing the team for what lies ahead.
With the Battalion having recently clinched a playoff spot, the group enters the final stretch of the regular season sitting at 73 points (35-25-2-1). With only a handful of games remaining, the team could finish anywhere from fourth to seventh in the Eastern Conference standings – meaning every game still carries significant weight.
For Houlder, this part of the season is less about reinventing the team and more about sharpening the details.
“I always think when there are just a few games left that you kind of want to refine your game,” he explained. “You’re not really going to change anything. You get your specialty teams aligned so that when you’re heading into the playoffs, you feel confident in what you’re doing – not only us as a staff, but with the players – so that they feel confident in what we’re doing.”
As the postseason approaches, experience becomes increasingly valuable. In Houlder’s eyes, the leadership group will play a crucial role in guiding the Battalion through the intensity of playoff hockey.
“As it always usually is, it tends to be your older guys who you rely on in the playoffs because the game changes and gets a bit heavier,” he said. “Those are the guys we’re going to be looking to lead us through the next round.”
Houlder understands the demands of playoff hockey as well as anyone. A Thunder Bay native, he first made his mark in North Bay as a player with the Centennials, patrolling the blue line for three seasons from 1984 to 1987.
His strong junior career led to him being selected in the fourth round, 84th overall, by the Washington Capitals in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft. From there, he carved out a long and reliable NHL career, appearing in 846 regular-season games and recording 250 points (59-191–250), while suiting up for seven franchises: Washington, Buffalo, St. Louis, Anaheim, Tampa Bay, San Jose, and Nashville.
In recognition of both his playing career and contributions to the local hockey community, Houlder was inducted into the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.
Since joining the Battalion’s coaching staff in the 2017-18 season, Houlder has become a key voice behind the bench, offering players guidance shaped by decades of experience at the highest levels of the game.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve played,” Houlder said with a laugh. “But I try to bring just the experience of if they have a question, come ask me, because I’ve probably been through it. Good or bad, maybe I handled it well, maybe I didn’t, but if I didn’t, I also learned from it. So I really do try to help them out in that way.”
That perspective, built through years of learning, adapting, and persevering, is exactly what makes Houlder such a valuable presence for a young OHL team chasing postseason success.
And after a frightening detour earlier this year, he’s right back where he belongs.
