Andrew Oke commits to Spirit
Saginaw, MI. – The Saginaw Spirit announced today that goaltender Andrew Oke, the Spirit fifth round pick (89th overall) in the 2020 OHL Under-17 Priority Selection, has committed to an Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Standard Player Agreement and Education Package.
“The Saginaw Spirit are very pleased that Andrew Oke and his family have made this commitment to our organization,” said Spirit General Manager Dave Drinkill. “We felt Oke was one of the top goaltenders in the draft and one that led his Honeybaked team to a tremendous season, including many tournament wins. Adding him to our group of talented young goaltenders we have in our system was a priority for us post-draft, and we couldn’t be happier to have him sign today.”
The Sterling Heights, Michigan native is coming off of stellar 2019-20 season with Honeybaked Under-15, leading them to an HPHL Championship. The 6’1, 172-pound netminder played in 38 regular season games, featuring a 1.82 goals against average and a .910 save percentage.
“It is awesome finally touching pen to paper,” said Oke. “It was such a surreal feeling knowing that I’m signing with a great organization like Saginaw. I’m excited to see what is in store and can’t wait to meet all the fans and teammates.”
Oke is the highest Spirit draft pick used on a goaltender since the 2018 Priority Selection when the team selected Tristan Lennox in the second round (26th overall).
“When my name popped up, I was super motivated and happy to see all my hard work pay off,” continued the 16-year old goaltender. “It’s only the beginning now and I have to work ten times harder than I did before. I’m excited to know that an awesome organization like Saginaw drafted me, and I’m so excited to get things going.”
