5th Annual OHL/HPHL Battle of the Border Details
The fifth annual ‘Battle of the Border’ Showcase opened today in Windsor.
In partnership with the High Performance Hockey League, the event brings together Ontario Hockey League prospects from both sides of the border for a weekend of competition featuring many top players eligible for the OHL Priority Selection and Under-18 Priority Selection.
A total of 36 games will be played at the WFCU Centre, home of the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires, November 9-11, between 24 teams divided into the under-16 division and under-18 category introduced last season.
Minor midget teams representing Ontario include the Guelph Jr. Gryphons (OMHA – SCTA), North Central Predators (OMHA – ETA), North Central Predators (OMHA – ETA), Waterloo Wolves (ALLIANCE), Whitby Wildcats (OMHA – ETA), and York-Simcoe Express (OMHA – ETA).
Major midget teams representing Ontario include the Central Ontario Wolves (OMHA – ETA), Huron Perth Lakers (ALLIANCE), London Jr. Knights (ALLIANCE), Mississauga Senators (GTHL), Whitby Wildcats (OMHA – ETA), and Windsor Jr. Spitfires (ALLIANCE).

In addition to the competition on the ice, players and their families will have the opportunity to watch the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires practice on Saturday morning then play the Guelph Storm at night. There will also be an information seminar focusing on areas such as the league’s scholarship program, professional support programs, development opportunities, benefits, player environment, and safety, health and welfare programs.
Seven players from last year’s event were chosen in the first round of the 2018 OHL Priority Selection including first overall pick Quinton Byfield of the Sudbury Wolves (York-Simcoe Express) second overall pick Evan Vierling of the Flint Firebirds (York-Simcoe Express), fourth overall pick Cole Perfetti of the Saginaw Spirit (Vaughan Kings), seventh overall pick Daniil Chayka of the Guelph Storm (Toronto Jr. Canadiens), 11th overall pick Tyler Tullio of the Oshawa Generals (Vaughan Kings), 19th overall pick Jacob Perreault of the Sarnia Sting (Chicago Mission), and 20th overall pick Ryan O’Rourke of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds (Vaughan Kings). An additional 10 players from last year’s event were chosen in the 2018 Under-18 OHL Priority Selection.
All games will have three 17-minute periods with a flood occurring midway through the second period. 3-on-3 overtime will ensue should games be tied after regulation time, followed by a three-man shootout if there is no overtime goal. Total points accumulated by each country will determine the ‘Battle of the Border’ champion. Teams receive three points for a win, one point for each tie, and one extra point for an overtime or shootout win. The United States have won all three events to date.
