Roy named Memorial Cup MVP
Kitchener Rangers captain Derek Roy won the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy as the most valuable player of the 2003 MasterCard Memorial Cup.
Roy, who also won the Wayne Gretzky “99” Award as the most valuable player in the OHL playoffs, scored three goals and one assist in four tournament games. He led the Rangers to their first Memorial Cup championship since 1982.
“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” Roy said after receiving the award. “There are 24 guys in the dressing room with one goal all year – to win the Memorial Cup.”
Nick Boynton was the last OHL player to win the award when he led the Ottawa 67’s to the Memorial Cup championship on home ice in 1999.
Gregory Campbell, who was named first start of the final game, won the George Parsons Trophy as the most sportsmanlike player and Ed Chynoweth Trophy winner as the top scorer in the tournament with one goal and six assists.
Scott Dickie won the Hap Emms Memorial Trophy as the outstanding goaltender with a 4-0 record and a 2.25 goals against average and .911 save percentage.
“It was four years of work – it’s an unbelieveable feeling,” Dickie said. “It’s a big weight off of my shoulders.”
The Rangers completed a near sweep of the tournament all-star team with Roy, Campbell and Mike Richards named as forwards, defenceman Steve Eminger and Dickie. Hull defender Doug O’Brien was also named to the all-star team. It’s the first time five players from the same team have been named to the all-star team since the Medicine Hat Tigers in 1987.
