Bulls name Jake Marchment Captain
Tuesday August 26, 2014
BELLEVILLE, ON – It didn’t take Jake Marchment long to make an impression. The hard working centreman proved to teammates, coaches, and opponents that he will go the distance for the logo on his chest last season, and has been named the captain of the 2014-15 Belleville Bulls.
An acquisition from the North Bay Battalion last summer, Marchment, a consummate team player, brought a hard, north and south game night in and night out to earn the respect of his coaches and teammates. The Courtice native’s efforts caught the attention of the Los Angeles Kings, who drafted him in the sixth round of the 2014 NHL Draft in June.
“It’s been a whirlwind,” said the 19 year-old centreman. “The last two years of my life have come and gone so fast and so much has changed. I’ve gone from playing Major Midget to playing Junior A in Wellington to gaining more responsibility in Belleville last season. Being drafted and now being named captain both mean a lot to me and I have to thank my family, coaches and teammates for helping me to this point.”
Marchment, who was a captain throughout his minor hockey days, is excited to lead and looking forward to hitting the ice when Bulls Training Camp opens on Wednesday. “I think everyone is really wanting to build off our strong finish to last season,” said Marchment. “We learned some hard lessons and had to work hard at playing as a team. Now it’s time for us to show the league and our fans that we’re here to play consistently every night.”
Bulls Head Coach and General Manager George Burnett has seen Marchment’s play improve leaps and bounds over the past two seasons. “Jake has excellent hockey sense and leads by example in every aspect of his game. His skating, his confidence and his fitness have all improved significantly over the past year and he devoted his summer to staying in Belleville to work out with Assistant Coach Jason Supryka. Jake is a man of few words, but he comes to play every night.”
Marchment scored 10 goals and added 22 assists in 57 games as a rookie with the Bulls last season. He attended the Los Angeles Kings Development Camp earlier this summer alongside Bulls teammate Stephen Harper. “Seeing how things work in a pro environment just gives me more incentive to keep working hard and improving my skills. Being awarded the captaincy is an honour and a new challenge, one that I’m anxious to embark on.”
