OHL This Week: January 20 to 23, 2022
OHL This Week returns for a full slate of action this coming weekend as playoff races heat up across the League. Here’s a look at what’s happening.
Greyhounds visit Storm on TSN Friday night:
The matchup is so good that it’s been added to TSN’s CHL coverage this coming Friday, January 21st at the Sleeman Centre. Two division leaders go head-to-head as the Greyhounds, one of two 20-win teams in the League, visit the Storm who have won four of their last five games at 7:30pm. Fans across the country can catch OHL action on TSN!
Steelheads and Generals meet on CBC Gem Thursday night:
Catch two competitive Eastern Conference teams streaming free on CBC Gem Thursday night as the League-leading Mississauga Steelheads visit the Oshawa Generals at 7:05pm. The Trout return to the Tribute Communities Centre after getting the better of the Generals by a score of 3-1 on Sunday. Three reasons to watch

Firebirds name Brennan Othmann captain:
The Flint Firebirds have named 19-year-old New York Rangers prospect Brennan Othmann captain of the team. The left-winger leads the team with 46 points and sits second in OHL goal-scoring with 26 markers over 31 games. Read more

Frontenacs raise $8,921 through Hockey Fights Cancer Night: The Kingston Frontenacs announced that their Hockey Fights Cancer jersey auction raised $8,921.50, which will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. Read more
Generals hold drive-thru Teddy Bear Toss: The Oshawa Generals and their generous fans have donated teddy bears and stuffed toys to Lakeridge Health Oshawa as well as the Boys and Girls Club of Durham. The Generals held the event on Saturday, January 15th and also collected both winter clothing and food donations in support of Feed The Need in Durham.
Petes to wear warmup jerseys highlighting inclusivity in second half of season: A set of one-of-a-kind jerseys conceptualized and designed locally by Fully Promoted/Signarama Peterborough will be worn in the second half of the Petes 2021-22 season. The custom, game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off at the end of the season with proceeds going towards future hockey initiatives that look to make hockey more accessible. Read more

Wizardry Night in Erie on Saturday: The Erie Otters face-off with the Saginaw Spirit on Saturday at Erie Insurance Arena on Wizardry Night. The first 500 kids through the door will receive Wizardry giveaway, and fans who come to the game in costume can win great prizes! The Otters will also be holding a second intermission ‘Sock Toss,’ with collected socks being donated to community shelters.
ALUMNI NOTES:
Pronger’s #44 retired in St. Louis: Former Peterborough Petes blue line great Chris Pronger saw his #44 ascend to the rafters in St. Louis on Monday night. The now 47-year-old, who spent nine of his 18 NHL seasons in St. Louis, was an OHL champion with the Peterborough Petes in 1993. He joins the company of other St. Louis contemporary and fellow OHL alumnus Al MacInnis in having his number retired by the Blues. Pronger retired following the 2011-12 season. He won a Stanley Cup championship as a member of the 2007 Anaheim Ducks.
Perfetti scores first NHL goal: Saginaw Spirit graduate Cole Perfetti scored his first career OHL goal on Tuesday as the Winnipeg Jets fell to the Washington Capitals 4-3 in overtime. Perfetti made his NHL debut back on October 13 and has a goal in his five games played this season. The 20-year-old from Whitby, Ont. had been excelling with the AHL’s Manitoba Moose, putting up 15 points (6-9–15) over 17 games. The CHL Scholastic Player of the Year in 2019-20, Perfetti put up back-to-back 37 goal seasons for the Spirit, setting a single season club record with 111 points in 2019-20.
Byfield recalled by Kings: Former OHL Rookie of the Year Quinton Byfield has been called up by the Los Angeles Kings and is slated to make his season debut tonight when they face the Colorado Avalanche. Byfield, who was sidelined with an ankle injury through the opening months of the season, posted six points (4-2–6) in 11 AHL games with the Ontario Reign. The 19-year-old from Newmarket, Ont. posted an assist in six NHL contests last year. Byfield played two seasons with the Sudbury Wolves from 2018-20, registering 82 points (32-50–82) over 45 games in 2019-20 before being the second overall pick of the 2020 NHL Draft.
67’s grad Quinn thriving at next level: Former 52-goal scorer Jack Quinn is off to a great start in the Buffalo Sabres organization. Having recently made his NHL debut, Quinn will be in the lineup tonight when the Sabres face-off against the Dallas Stars. Read more
KEY MATCHUPS:
Soo Greyhounds at Guelph Storm
Friday January 21st – 7:30pm, Live on TSN
A second-straight Friday night of OHL action on TSN pits the Soo Greyhounds against the host Guelph Storm on a game that will air across the country. One of two 20-win teams in the League entering the week’s action, the Greyhounds feature the OHL’s top power play as top goal-scorer Tye Kartye has scored 15 of his League-leading 27 goals with the extra man. The Storm continue to be a consistent force, carrying an 18-8-2-1 record in a first place tie atop the Midwest Division. After a long hiatus between their last action on December 18th and return on January 16th, the Storm have come back with a 7-4 win over Kitchener and a 5-4 overtime loss to Flint. The Greyhounds have won three of the five meetings between the two teams this season.
Hamilton Bulldogs at Barrie Colts
Sunday January 23rd – 7:00pm
Two of the hottest Eastern Conference teams do battle on Sunday night in Barrie as the Hamilton Bulldogs bring new lineup additions Mason McTavish and Ryan Winterton looking to expand their East Division lead. The 18-9-2-2 Bulldogs were a force last week, defeating Niagara 6-2 and Kingston 8-1. They’re line up for three-in-three action this weekend with matchups against in Kingston and Ottawa before their Sunday night stop in Barrie. The Colts have won eight of their last 10, owning a 17-8-3-0 record as captain and LA Kings prospect Brandt Clarke leads OHL blueliners offensively with 32 points (6-26–32) over 26 games. Overage goaltender Mack Guzda is 8-2-0-0 since joining the Colts back in mid-November.
