Olivier Savard commits to Spirit
Saginaw, MI – Saginaw Spirit general manager Dave Drinkill announced Monday the club has signed 2021 second round pick Olivier Savard (Oh-liv-EE-eh Suh-Vard) to a Standard Player Agreement and Education Package.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Olivier Savard to the Spirit family,” said GM Drinkill. “Olivier plays a style that meshes well with our system. He loves to get up the ice, join the rush, and adds a right-handed shot defenseman to our lineup, which is a huge bonus. We feel that he has the potential to be a powerplay quarterback for the Spirit one day, as well. As a staff, we were blown away with his interview for the draft. Olivier is a very mature young man with tremendous leadership qualities. We had him rated much higher in the draft, so we were pleased to get him at 29th overall and can’t wait to get started with him.”
The 6-foot-1, 176-pound defenseman from Montreal, Quebec now resides in Etobicoke, Ontario. Savard was rostered by the Toronto Nationals U16, but did not play this season due to the cancellation of Minor Hockey in Ontario. Savard played for the Mississauga Reps U15 during the 2019-20 season, scoring five goals and adding 12 assists for 17 points in 33 games.
“Signing this contract is like a dream coming true,” said Savard. “When I heard my name during the draft, it was an unreal feeling. It is such an honor to play for the Spirit organization. Saginaw was by far my top place to go and I am sure it is going to be an awesome experience to play there in front of the fans. I know it is going to be amazing to work with the guys that have more experience than me on this team and I am sure they’re going to help me improve on my game. I will always give my one-hundred percent for this team.”
Olivier Savard will wear No. 11 for the Spirit this upcoming 2021-22 OHL season.
