OHL all-time goal-scoring leader Tavares named captain of Maple Leafs
He marked up scoresheets across the OHL for four years as the league’s first player to be granted exceptional rookie status. Fast track 11 years later and John Tavares has been named the 25th captain in Toronto Maple Leafs franchise history.
Tavares’ 215 goals are an OHL record. The 29-year-old from Mississauga, Ont. has continued the dominance he showed as a member of the Oshawa Generals and London Knights from 2005-09 into his NHL career, one that quickly accelerated after the New York Islanders selected him first overall in the 2009 NHL Draft.

After 10 years on Long Island, Tavares joined the Maple Leafs to record a career-high 88 points (47-41–88) over 82 games last season.
On Monday, the Leafs had Tavares’ three-week-old son Jace break the big news. The infant was swaddled in a No. 91 Leafs sweater with a ‘C’ on the lapel.
“I can’t even describe it,” Tavares said of the moment. “When I walked in and seeing my son wearing the jersey and break the news to me was a moment I’ll never forget. A tremendous way they did it for me.”
