2012 WJC Day 3 Results
Team Canada improved to 2-0 in the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship on Wednesday night with a 5-0 win over the Czech Republic.
Mark Stone of the Brandon Wheat Kings continued to deliver offensively netting the first Team Canada goal at 5:37 of the first period.
Canada extended their lead in the second period with goals from Ryan Strome of the Niagara IceDogs, and former Prince George Cougar Brett Connolly to lead 3-0 after two periods.
Mark Scheifele of the Barrie Colts scored twice in the third period to round out the scoring for Canada with both goals set up by Colts’ teammate Tanner Pearson.
Scott Wedgewood of the Plymouth Whalers made 26 saves to earn the shutout in goal and also chipped in with an assist.
The IceDogs’ Freddie Hamilton picked up an assist and was named Player of the Game for Canada.
Petr Mrazek of the Ottawa 67’s took the loss for the Czech Republic but was named Player of the Game with 33 saves.
In other action at the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship, Finland upset the United States by a score of 4-1 with both clubs now tied with 1-1 records in Group B action. Brandon Saad of the Saginaw Spirit scored the lone goal for USA with assists to Medicine Hat Tigers forward Emerson Etem and future Saint John Sea Dog Charlie Coyle. Kitchener Rangers’ netminder John Gibson took the loss for the US but made 23 saves.
In Calgary, Sweden edged Switzerland in a shootout by a score of 4-3. Sarnia Sting forward Ludvig Rensfeldt picked up a goal and an assist for Sweden in the victory.
The final game of Wednesday action saw Russia skate to a 3-1 win over Slovakia in Calgary. Saskatoon Blades goaltender Andrei Makarov made 31 saves and was named Player of the Game for the Russians. Offensively, CHL players Nail Yakupov of the Sarnia Sting and Mikhail Grigorenko of the Quebec Remparts each picked up an assist.
