2012 WJC Day 1 Results
Team Canada opened the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship with a big 8-1 win over Team Finland in front of a packed Rexall Place in Edmonton on Monday afternoon.
Mark Stone of the Brandon Wheat Kings was named Player of the Game with a hat-trick performance including the first goal of the game at 2:14.
Jonathan Huberdeau of the Saint John Sea Dogs led the way for Canada with five points including a goal and four assists, while Ryan Strome of the Niagara IceDogs had a goal and three assists.
The IceDogs’ Dougie Hamilton, Brendan Gallagher of the Vancouver Giants, and former Prince George Cougar Brett Connolly rounded out the scoring for Canada.
Mark Visentin got the win in goal with 24 saves.
Christopher Gibson of the Chicoutimi Sagueneens took the loss in goal for Finland but made 34 saves on 42 shots.
Canada will have a day off Tuesday before returning to the ice Wednesday night to play the Czech Republic.
In other World Junior action in Edmonton, Team USA defeated Denmark by a score of 11-3. Future Saint John Sea Dogs forward Charlie Coyle of Team USA was named Player of the Game with a hat-trick, while London Knights Captain Jarred Tinordi and JT Miller of the Plymouth Whalers each chipped in a goal, Emerson Etem of the Medicine Hat Tigers and Austin Watson of the Peterborough Petes each had two assists, and Brandon Saad of the Saginaw Spirit had one assist. In goal, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhound Jack Campbell made 21 saves in the win. Despite the loss, Nicklas Jensen of the Oshawa Generals had three assists for Denmark.
In Calgary, Team Sweden opened the World Juniors with a 9-4 win over Team Latvia. Ludvig Rensfeldt of the Sarnia Sting picked up three assists, and Rickard Rakell of the Plymouth Whalers had two assists, and Victor Rask of the Calgary Hitmen had one assist for Sweden. Despite the loss, Blainville-Boisbriand Armada Nikita Kolesnikovs had an assist for Latvia.
The opening day of the tournament wrapped up with Russia skating to a 3-0 win over Switzerland in Calgary. Alexander Khokhlachev of the Windsor Spitfires scored the game-winner, while Quebec Remparts top scorer Mikhail Grigorenko scored a goal and an assist.
