Soares delivers big time as Guelph Storm’s improved play continues by Tony Saxon
It took a while, three years in fact, but Chris Soares finally has his first OHL goal(s).
The 19-year-old Guelph Storm rookie scored twice in the first period Wednesday to lead the Storm to a 6-4 victory over the London Knights at the Sleeman Cenre. Guelph’s last two goals came into an empty net.
“It’s a great feeling. Especially to come in and help us get a big ‘W’ like that. It was awesome,” said the Milton native.
Soares was originally drafted in the 11th round of the 2022 OHL draft by the Sarnia Sting. Destined for the NCAA (he will attend Mercyhurst in September), he never played for Sarnia, instead playing the last two seasons in the OJHL with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens.
But when new rules allowed players to play in the OHL without jeopardizing their NCAA aspirations, he accepted a free agent invite to the Storm’s training camp and just kept giving them a reason not to cut him.
“I just came in every single day, played my game, put the work in,” he said of his mindset coming into camp. “Nothing changes from when I was younger. Same thing every single day – working hard.”
And when he finally made the team?
“Great feeling. Nothing better.”
The Milton native, who now has five points in 12 games this season, also dropped the gloves with big London defenceman Julian Brown in the third period Wednesday.
