Meet Matthew Lyall, 2004 2nd Round Draft Choice
Q. What went through your mind when you were drafted 27th overall by the Storm ?
A. I didn’t know what to think! I didn’t expect to go as high as I did, but I was very excited as was my family.
Q. Are you setting any goals for yourself this season ?
A. I just want to step in and do my best. I want to be in top shape and work hard. I want the team to know I am giving it 100%.
Q. What kind of impact would you like to have with the Storm ?
A. A positive one for sure. I know being new to the team I will have a lot to learn and I’m excited about that. I am also excited about playing with some new players and joining a great club.
Q. Any nerves at all about joining the reigning OHL Champions ?
A. On the ice, no. I’ve always welcomed playing with new players and haven’t had any problems in terms of chemistry. Changing schools is a different story. That is were the nerves will come into play.
Q. I know you were an Assistant Captain with your former team. How do you see coming from a leadership role like that into a club that already has great leadership ?
A. I’ve always been able to take charge when needed, both on and off the ice. However I am coming into a new situation and a new locker-room. I know I have a lot to learn from these guys and welcome the change of scenery.
Q. What would you say is your best attribute ?
A. Speed. I know I will be up against stiffer competition, and I know I will have to rely on that strength even more at this level.
Q. On the flip side, what would you say you need or want to improve upon ?
A. Playing more physical is something I want to work on. I know I’ll have some work to do in that department. I am hoping to learn more about how I can use my strengths to my advantage as well as improve upon other aspects of my game. I want to become more of a complete player, more of a two-way player.
Q. What accomplishments are you most proud of in your young hockey career ?
A. The OMHA Minor Midget Championship was very exciting. We lost in the Final Round of the OHL Cup, but it was an amazing experience. I’ve also won 4 GTHA Championships which were great highlights.
