Van Volsen scored from his back-hand with Kitchener a man short and on a penalty delay, as he buried the puck past Rangers goaltender Christian Kirsch (San Jose Sharks), after making the initial save to send the packed house at the Aud in a complete shock as boo’s reigned down, and with Kitchener’s coaching staff up in arms with the turn of events.

Sarnia defenseman and assistant captain Mitch Young, who hails from the nearby Kitchener area in Elmira, Ontario, and was playing in front of family and friends to support him in his next to last game in his OHL career, delivered arguably his best performance in a long line of great games during his four seasons with the Sting, scoring twice.

His second goal and seventh of the season tied the game at 3-3 with less than six minutes to play at 14:16. Like Van Volsen’s goal, it came following a rebound with Matthew Manza and Kalib Capecci assisting. Young was selected as the first star.

Manza, who also assisted on the winning goal along with Beckham Edwards, had three assists tonight. Beckham Edwards had two helpers. Dylan Edwards was the second star with two points.

Sarnia goaltender Evan Maillet stood on his head tonight, putting up a goaltending clinic, as he stopped 31 of 33 shots before he was forced to leave the game following an injury sustained early in the third period. It was hard to pinpoint which save was Maillet’s best, except to say he was sensational, especially in the first period stopping all 13 shots he faced, many of which were taken in high danger areas. Maillet was voted as the third star this evening.

It was a crazy game from the get-go as Sarnia was out-shot 13-1 in the opening period, and overall 46-20. Patrick Quinlan came in to replace the injured Maillet and he took over where Maillet left off, stopping all but one of the 13 shots he faced.

Sarnia’s Ben Pickell scored his 24th of the campaign. Liam Beamish, Jacob Reese, and Kalib Capecci had single assists.

The Sting will travel to Saginaw for a Saturday night tilt that is highly anticipated and will close the curtain for the 2025-26 season.

Dylan Edwards had a goal and an assist for the Rangers. Gabriel Chiarot (Vancouver Canucks) and Jack Pridham (Chicago Blackhawks) also scored once. Sam O’Reilly (Tampa Bay Lightning) had a pair of assists. Both teams went 2/5 with the man advantage.

The first period was all Kitchener and only the excellent goaltending of Maillet kept the game scoreless. Even though the Sting registered only one shot, Sarnia did have a number of blocked shots as they were out-shot 13-1. Maillet was a wall in the opening stanza as he continued to stop shot after shot.

In the second period Kitchener out-shot Sarnia 16-9, with both teams scoring twice. The Sting took all of 13 seconds to match their shot total of the first period, and 22 seconds later Sarnia opened up the scoring.

Pickell let go a shot from the top of the face-off circle as he was streaking down the left side and his shot was misplayed by goaltender Kirsch. The puck went off his glove and into the net at the 38 second mark. Beamish and Reese assisted.

Dylan Edwards tied the game for the Rangers at 6:27 with a power-play goal from O’Reilly and Humphreys.

Chiarot put Kitchener up 2-1 at 11:27 with an unassisted goal. Sarnia finished with a home record of 11-19-3-1, and now will travel on the road to both Kitchener on Friday night, and for the final game of the 2025-26 season, with a much anticipated rematch against the Saginaw Spirit on Saturday evening.

In the final home game the Sting took a 3-1 lead into the final twenty minutes, scoring three times to hold off the charging Otters.

Callum Hughes sliced the Sting lead to 3-2 at 9:32, but Sarnia retaliated as Ben Pickell scored an unassisted goal after a great individual play, stealing the puck away from an Erie player in the Otters end, and then whirled and beat Erie goaltender Noah Erliden (33 saves on 38 shots) at 13:39 for what proved to be the winning goal. It was Pickell 23rd goal of the season and he was selected as the first star.

Erie was not finished, and they pulled to within one goal at 16:12 on a Tyler Cooper power-play goal, playing six on four, with the extra attacker, after pulling Erlinden with just under five minutes to play. That was as close as Erie would come.

Sarnia went on to score an empty net goal at 18:49 from Tyler Challenger, his second of the game and his 10th of the season, against his former team, and Challenger was named the second star. Cameron Aucoin assisted on the goal, his second helper of the game.

Jacob Reese with a blast scored the final Sting home goal at 19:22, his fifth of the season, unassisted. Liam Beamish with his 11th of the year and Carson Hall with his 3rd also scored for the Sting. Beamish was awarded the third star.

Sting forward Logan Hawery had a big night with three helpers. Chase Gaughan and Matthew Manza contributed one assist each.

Sarnia out-shot Erie in each period, and overall 39-27. The Sting dominated in the face-off circle 40-22. Each team scored a power-play goal, as Erie finished one for four, and Sarnia one for three.

In goal Patrick Quinlan had a fantastic night, as he turned away 24 of the 27 shots he faced in tonight’s game.

Sarnia scored the only goal in the first period, even though Erie appeared to score first late in the period. The goal was immediately waved off, due to goaltending interference.

Shortly after the Sting scored an even strength goal at the 17:00 mark. Cameron Aucoin in an attempt to drive towards the net, had the puck deflected off his stick and Challenger jumped on the loose puck and he beat Erlinden on the stick side. Both Cameron Aucoin and Logan Hawery assisted on the goal.

Sarnia played a strong opening period as they out-shot Erie 13-9.

In a very exciting second period, which featured three fights, the Sting out-scored Erie 2-1 and out-shot the Otters 16-10.

A quick fight opened the period as Sarnia’s Brenner Lammens and Erie’s Kayden Edwards had the big crowd on their feet, with both players landing blows. Both players received a five minute major, and a game misconduct.

Tempers flared shortly after, and the Sting’s Ben Pickell and the Otter’s Lucas Ambrosio fought round two, with both players receiving fighting majors.

The third fight lead to the Sting scoring their second goal of the game. Sarnia’s Jacob Reese and Erie’s Jackson Schouten fought, with Schouten getting the instigator, two minute minor. The Sting took full advantage, as they scored a power-play goal with Beamish finding the back of the net, from the door-step, at 8:33. It was a moving ceremony with each player thanking families, billets and the Sting fans, followed by pictures and lots of hand-shakes and hugs.

The Sting were down 6-3 entering the third stanza but could not make a come-back as the period exploded into a donnybrook with three major brawls, that had all players on the ice fighting. After the dust had settled numerous players were penalized and shown the gate for the rest of the game.

Saginaw’s top line combined for 11 points. The two teams will play the final regular season game in Saginaw, Sat. night.

Sarnia fell into some penalty trouble in the opening period and the Spirit scored twice on the power-play. The line of Barabanov, Zhilkin and Klepov put up nine points combined, which included three goals.

Barabanov open the scoring with an even strength goal at 1:58 with both Zhilkin and Klepov assisting. The Spirit scored on both 60 seconds apart. Carson Harmer scored at 6:31 and Barabanov followed with his second of the game at 7:31. Klepov assisted on both of the goals.

The Spirit scored once more, seconds after another penalty had just expired. crowd of 4,094 at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena and a strong effort from the Sarnia Sting (18-37-8-1) was not enough, as the Windsor Spitfires (41-15-6-2) ended any playoff hopes for the home team with a Friday night 6-3 win.

In the third period Sarnia closed to within one goal twice as Kaden Aucoin (2nd) scored unassisted to slice the lead to 3-2 and Mitch Young with a power-play goal, his fourth of the season, from Beckham Edwards and Jack Van Volsen kept the game at a one goal deficit 4-3.

In the end Windsor scored twice into an empty net from Liam Greentree (New York Rangers) unassisted, and Alex Pharand (Chicago Blackhawks) at 19:04 and 19:28 to ice the game away.

Greentree had a couple of goals and an assist and was named the first star. Van Volsen had a big night for the Sting with a goal and an assist, and was selected as the second star. The third star went to the Spitfires Wyatt Kennedy, who tallied once tonight.

Sarnia’s Sarvir Jaworski and Kalib Capecci contributed with one assist each. Sting goaltender Kale Osipenko did all he could with a very good performance in net as he stopped 23 of 27.

In all Windsor out-shot Sarnia 29-23. Spitfires goaltender Michael Newlove turned away 20 of 23 shots. In the face-off dot, the Sting were better 37-32.

Sarnia went one for two, and Windsor failed to score on two chances with the man-advantage.

The Sting drew first blood with an early goal at 2:46 of the opening period. A three way passing play that saw Capecci send a pass up to Jaworski, and he sent a cross ice feed to Van Volsen, who was parked at the side of the net and his one timer found the back of the net.

The Spitfires tied the game at 10:21 on a goal from Greentree, with Carson Woodall drawing the lone assist.

At 14:04, Windsor went ahead for the first time. Anthony Cristoforo scored with both teams playing four on four hockey. Cristoforo beat Osipenko on the far post, on his stick side.

Windsor appeared to score late in the period, but the Sting challenged the play for an offside, and after further review, the challenge was upheld and the goal was disallowed.

Sarnia in the final minute was called for two penalties, that put them two players down because of a phantom call on goaltender Newlove, who was not even touched. The Spitfires two man advantage would continue into the second period.

Sarnia out-shot Windsor 14-8.

The Spitfires dominated the second period territorially, as well as out-shooting the Sting 13-4. Only the goaltending of Osipenko kept the game close, as he allowed only one goal.

Osipenko made two excellent saves, the first one stopping Andrew Robinson with a nice pad save and minutes later came up with an even better stop, as he robbed Conor Walton with the top portion of his stick.

Windsor’s only goal came at 8:23, as the Spitfires scored a second goal in the game with both teams playing four on four. Kaden is one of six rookies who have joined the Sting for their first year and has already made a lasting impact on the team.

The 2009-born defenceman played his minor hockey career in Chicago, earning the attention of Sting scouts and management. The Illinois-native was selected by the Sting in the second round, 26th overall, of the 2025 OHL Priority Selection. Shortly after, two years older brother Cameron signed with the Sting as a free agent, making the Aucoins the second set of brothers to play for the Sting at the same time. Kaden said, “We were actually together when he made his decision to join the team. It helped me a lot coming into the pre-season.”

After years of competing against each other growing up, the Aucoins were teammates for the first time. Kaden said his family was excited to find out, “Our family was super stoked. Finally, they could watch us play together on the same team.” In his feature interview, Cameron mentioned that he and his brother grew up with their fair share of healthy competition and that the change of pace was refreshing. Kaden agreed and said, “Now that he’s my teammate, we have a better bond. We aren’t too hard on each other anymore.”

The Aucoin name is well known in the hockey world. Adrian Aucoin, their father, played an extensive career. He played for seven NHL teams, won silver with Team Canada at the 1994 Olympics, and wore the C throughout his career. Oldest brother, Kyle Aucoin, has played in the NCAA with Harvard University, Miami-Ohio, and now with the Indy Fuel of the ECHL.

Kaden attributes his love of the game to the prevalence of hockey in his family growing up. He was brought up going to his dad’s and older brother’s games, he said, “Watching my dad put a lot of weight on me to play, which I think was for the best. Since my brothers played, it helped me develop quicker since I was learning from older guys.” Kaden said he fell in love with the community that hockey brings from a young age, since he had been immersed in it with his dad his whole life.

Players often describe the transition from minor hockey to the OHL as difficult because of the physicality and pace of play, but that wasn’t necessarily the case for the six-foot-two defenceman. He said he quickly adapted to the level of play, but adjusting as a rookie was a struggle: “It was tough. But having such a young team really helped me out. The older guys really stepped up and took us under their wing.”

Kaden describes himself as a physical defender who likes to produce on the offensive side as well. The young blue-liner is often on the penalty kill unit, where he has found success this season. He said that his awareness and grit have developed most this year, “I’ve been trying to earn a spot on this team. I’m always trying to show the guys that I care”.

Much like his teammates, Kaden describes the team as a tight-knit group that prioritizes team bonding outside of the rink. “Throughout the season, we have all gotten very close, which helps us in all aspects.”

As his first season in the OHL is winding down, Kaden reflected on the year he has had and what he has learned, “My biggest takeaway is that every game matters. We need to treat every game as a must-win”. When asked if his rookie season was what he expected it would be, Kaden said, “Yes and no. It’s been a lot of fun. We didn’t get the outcome we wanted this season, but overall the guys on the team helped me have a great rookie year.”

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Written by Mateya Steblaj-Wood Kaden Aucoin is a key piece of the Sting’s young core, with a promising future in Sarnia.
