Six unanswered goals, helped the Soo Greyhounds (15-9-1-1) come from behind, as they beat the Sarnia Sting (6-14-3-1) on Friday night 6-2, in front of 3,629, at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena. The game featured two new faces in the Sting family. Mathieu Turcotte made his coaching debut as the team’s new head coach and forward Tyler Challenger played his first game as a member of the Sting after he was acquired from the Erie Otters for Kase Kamzik earlier in the week. Sarnia played well in the first twenty minutes of the game, building up a two goal lead on goals from Lukas Fischer (St Louis Blues) his third of the year and Jack Van Volsen, who netted his seventh, a power-play goal, but that was all the offense could muster. The Soo preceded to score six straight goals, three in both the second and third periods to come out on top. Patrick Quinlan played a strong game stopping 34 of the 40 shots, and really could not be faulted on any of the Soo goals. Quinlan was selected as the third star. The Greyhounds out-shot the Sting 40-18. Fischer had a two point night to lead all Sting scorers. Liam Beamish, Cameron Aucoin and Beckham Edwards were also productive with one assist each. Sarnia shined in the face-off circle 41-26. Both teams scored once on the power-play.
Marco Mignosa (Tampa Bay Lightning) was the first star from the Soo with a pair of assists. Quinn McKenzie found the back of the net twice and was named the second star. Christopher Brown contributed a three point night, with a goal and two assists. Jordan Charron (Pittsburgh Penguins), scored what proved to be the winning goal, as part of a two point night. In addition to Mignosa’s two assists, Travis Hayes (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Tobias Zvolensky also added two helpers. Noah Tegelaar turned away 16 of 18 shots for the Soo. Sarnia scored the only two goals in the first period, despite being out-shot 12-9. Fischer opened up the scoring early on at 2:34. After being set up by Beamish and Cameron Aucoin, Fisher let go a shot from a bad angle, low to the ice. Van Volsen scored with the man-advantage to extend the Sting lead to 2-0. Van Volsen beat goaltender Tegelaar up high over his left shoulder at 14:38 from Edwards and Fischer. The second period was one the Sting would just soon like to forget. The Soo scored three unanswered goals to overcome a 2-0 deficit and out-shot Sarnia 16-2. The Sting did not register a shot until the 14:14 mark. Hunter Solomon put the Greyhounds on the board at 5:23 from Christopher Brown and Brodie McConnell-Barker. The Soo scored the equalizer at 9:52 from Quinn McKenzie, finishing off a two on one, after a feed from Mignosa. Travis Hayes was credited with the second assist. Quinlan made a spectacular save moments later as he robbed Jeremy Martin. Charron put the greyhounds in front for good at 14:21 on a break-away, with the lone assist awarded to Zvolensky.
