By Carl Chimenti
Francis Parish scored twice in the second period and Brady Stonehouse (Edmonton Oilers) lit the lamp with the game winning goal in the shoot-out and the Peterborough Petes (14-30-2-5) defeated the Sarnia Sting (18-22-3-7) before another large crowd of 4,110, Saturday night at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena.
The Sting scored the lone goal in the third period at 8:55 on a nice play from Mitch Young at the blue-line and he moved in and sent a pass to Daylen Moses on a give and go. Moses returned the pass to Young and he scored the tying goal in regulation. In the overtime, Sting goaltender Evan Maillet shined as he made three terrific saves on Gavin Bryant, Aiden Young and Stonehouse to send the game into the shoot-out.
Sarnia out-shot Peterborough in the overtime 3-2 and overall 27-23. In the shoot-out Tyson Doucette and Alessandro Di lorio both scored, but the Sting came one short in dropping a second loss this season to the Petes.
Young had a goal (6th) and an assist and was selected as the second star. Di lorio’s opening goal was his ninth of the year. Easton Wainwright and Moses added single helpers. Maillet was in excellent form tonight stopping 20 of 22 shots.
Parish with his two goals was the first star and Colin Fitzgerald with a pair of assists was the third star for the Petes. Peterborough scored twice in five chances with the man-advantage, while Sarnia went 0/4. Petes goaltender Easton Rye played a solid game as he turned aside 25 of 27 shots. In the opening period Sarnia out-shot Peterborough 8-3 and scored the only goal at 9:18 on a three way passing play from Wainwright to Young and over to Di lorio, who was able to get a tap in goal near the front of the net.
Peterborough scored twice in the second period to erase a 1-0 deficit as they out-shot Sarnia 12-6. Parish scored on the power-play early at 1:26 from Fitzgerald and Aiden Young. Less than three minutes later Parish was at it again scoring his second of the game and second on the power-play at 3:13 from Carson Cameron and Fitzgerald. Maillet was busy and made several outstanding saves to keep his team in the game after forty minutes.
