By Carl Chimenti
The Kingston Frontenacs (16-8-4-1) scored five times in a seven minute span in the third period to break open a tightly contested tilt and they went on to beat the Sarnia Sting (8-17-2-4) 6-2, Sunday afternoon, at the Slush Puppie Place.
Entering the final period tied 1-1, in a very evenly played forty minutes, Matthew Soto scored twice, enroute to his first hat-trick of the season and was selected as the first star. The five goals allowed was a season high against the Sting in a single period, as well as the 47 shots on net in one game. Kingston out-shot Sarnia 47-28.
Tyson Doucette scored late in the final stanza at 18:59 with an extra attacker, but it was two little too late. The goal was Doucette’s team leading 13th goal of the season and was unassisted. Ryan Brown netted his fifth goal of the year and second in the last two games to open the scoring in the first period. Zach Filak and Hughston Hurt assisted on the goal. Sarnia dominated in the face-off circle 33-21, with Liam Beamish going 15/21, Carson Hall 9/14 and Easton Wainwright 7/17. Evan Maillet played a very good game with 41 saves, keeping the Sting close, on 46 shots. There was only two minor penalties called as both teams went 0/1 on the power-play.

Sarnia now returns to the Hive for a pair of home games, Wednesday (Dec. 11) against the Flint Firebirds and Friday (Dec. 13) vs the Owen Sound Attack. Sarnia played a solid road first period, winning puck battles and keeping play for the most part in the Kingston end. The Frontenacs out-shoot the Sting, but Sarnia scored the only goal. Ryan Brown found a loose puck that was shot from the point and he banged it home at 10:30. Filak and Hurt were rewarded with the assists. Maillet played a strong opening period stopping all 12 shots, including a handful of high danger zone shots.
Another strong period from the Sting in the middle frame, as they out-shot the Frontenacs 14-13. Kingston scored the only goal, but Maillet made a series of terrific saves in the final two minutes of the second period. A great pad save down low on Cal Uens and followed that up with a glove save shortly after. The Frontenacs tied the game early on at 2:10 as Soto beat Maillet with a shot under the bar on the right side. Emil Pieniniemi (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Burns assisted on the scoring play.
