By Carl Chimenti
A big crowd of 3,711 were treated to a very entertaining hockey game as the Sarnia Sting fell short in a 5-4 shoot-out loss to the Brampton Steelheads, Friday night, at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena. The game was close from beginning to end. Brampton scored twice in a span of 15 seconds on goals from Matej Stankoven and Parker Von Richter at 5:07 and 5:22 in the third period to go ahead for the first time.
Sarnia did not quit as they tied the game at 14:49 on a three-way passing play at 14:49 to tie the game at 4-4. Kase Kamzik sent a pass to Chase Gaughan and from his back hand he delivered to an on-rushing Lukas Fischer (St. Louis Blues), and he buried the puck on a one timer to send the crowd to its feet with a thunderous ovation. It was the captain’s second goal of the year and his biggest. It was Gaughan’s first OHL assist to go along with his first career OHL goal scored in the second period, as he was selected as the first star. The game went into overtime with the Sting forced to kill the first minor penalty called against them. Brampton had all three shots in the extra session as The game went to a shoot-out. The Steelheads scored on both of their shots on goals from Gabriel Chiarot (Vancouver Canucks) and Joshua Avery, too come away with the two points.
Like Gaughan, Mitch Young also had a goal and an assist. Easton Walos opened the scoring for the Sting. Kase Kamzik had a pair of assists. Liam Beamish and Sting goaltender Patrick Quinlan with his first career OHL assist, contributed single helpers. Quinlan was solid in net as he came up with 30 saves on 34 shots. Sarnia outshot Brampton 37-34 and were better in the face-off circle 36-26. Chiarot had two assists in addition to his shoot-out goal. Parker Von Richter with a two-point night was the second star and Jakub Fibigr with one goal was the third star. The Sting went one for two with the man advantage. Zach Bowen turned away 33 of 37 shots for the Steelheads. Brampton finished 0/1 on the power-play. A fast pace first period saw the Sting take a 2-1 lead as they outshot the Steelheads 14-8. Walos opened the scoring after taking a cross-ice feed from Young and his wrist shot beat Bowen on the stick side with Sarnia on the power-play. Quinlan also was credited with an assist. It did not take long for the Steelheads to retaliate as Fibigr (Seattle Kraken) tied the game at 13:34 from Parker Von Richter and Manuel Amado. Sarnia came right back to re-grab the lead on Mitch Young’s first of the year, which came unassisted at 14:39, with an even strength goal. The two teams traded goals in the second period. Troy Patton from Mason Zebeski and Chiarot tied the game for Brampton early in the period at 3:57. Sarnia went back ahead late at 16:33 as Gaughan scored his first OHL career goal, slipping the puck past Bowen after taking a short feed from Beamish behind the net. Kamzik was also awarded the second helper. The Sting were better on the shot clock for a second straight period 16-10. There was just one minor penalty called, and it was assessed to Brampton.
