By Carl Chimenti
The 17th annual Black and White game, in support of the United Way Sarnia Lampton, was a great success as Team Black beat Team White 2-1 in overtime, Thursday night, at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena, in front of a large enthusiastic crowd.
With summer slowly coming to an end, the boys of winter, took to the ice and provided much of the same exciting hockey that they provided all season long, during the very successful 2022-23 campaign. Rookie defenseman, Nathan Omeri, tied the game with first of his back-to-back goals, unassisted, late in the third period, on the powerplay, before adding the game winning goal at 2:42 in overtime. Forward Easton Wainwright drew the lone assist.
The game saw four goaltenders, pretty much sharing the net during the contest. Ben Gaudreau and Trey Caracciolo back-stopped Team Black and were the busier of the four netminders, stopping 22 of the 23 shots they faced. Nick Surzycia and Karsen Chartier managed, to turn aside 13 of 15 shots for Team White.
The two teams battled through a hard fought first period, with rookie forward Lane Sim scoring the lone goal. Forward Tyson Doucette and rear-guard Carson Campbell assisted on the goal. The second period was scoreless as Team Black out shot Team White 13-10.
The Sting will now await the opening of the pre-season with a home and home against the London Knights. The opening exhibition game will take place September 9th, at the Budweiser Gardens, in London, The two teams will be back in action the following day (September 10th), at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena, with puck drop at 2:05pm.
