Sting Win One And Tie One Over Week-End Games
The Sarnia Sting played a pair of home games over the week-end, winning one Friday night and tieing Sunday afternoon, and increasing their undefeated streak to 5 games and still remain within 3 points of the division leading Plymouth Whalers.
STING VS WHALERS Friday January 3rd @ Sarnia
On Friday night, the Sting moved within 3 points of the Western Division Leading Plymouth Whalers by defeating the Whalers by a score of 4 1 in from of 4,073 fans at the SSEC in Sarnia Friday night. The game saw little scoring in the first two periods until the Sting went ahead on Daniel Carcillo’s game winning goal at 12:14 of the 3rd period.
The Sting opened the scoring, just 1 minute, 23 seconds into the game on a power play goal by Dave Pszenyczny, from Kris Newbury and Reg Thomas. The Whalers would tie the game at 12:13 of the first period on an unassisted goal by Chad LaRose, his 36th of the season, and that would be all the scoring the Whalers would get for the night.
There was no scoring in the second period until the third period when Daniel Carcillo finally put one past Whaler goalie Paul Drew on a breakaway. Drew was outstanding during the game, stopping 31 out of 35 shots and was the game’s second star. Newbury scored an insurance goal, again on a breakaway, at 18:38 of the third, making it 3-1. Chance Fitzpatrick would add another goal with just 17 seconds remaining. Ryan Munce who also played an outstanding game in goal for the Sting stopped 21 out of 22 shots and was the game’s Ranson first star. Paul Drew was the games second star, while Daniel Carcillo was the Ranson third star of the game.
STING VS OWEN SOUND ATTACK Sunday January 5th @ Sarnia
On Sunday afternoon, the Sting took on the Owen Sound Attack and played to a 2-2 tie before 3,882 fans at the SSEC, the second smallest crowd of the season.
Both teams were held scoreless after one period of play and would remain scoreless until 6:28 of the second period when Jesse Gimblett scored his 9th goal of the season. The Sting would tie the game at the 12:16 mark of the second on Joey Tenute’s 17th goal. The Sting would go ahead 2-1 with only 15 seconds left in the second period on David Pszenyczny’s unassisted goal, a wrist shot from the point that got through some traffic and passed Attack goalie Dan LaCosta.
In the third, the Attack would tie the game at 15:01, a shot from just inside the blue line by Brad Richardson, who had two points on the night, a goal and an assist. The game would end tied 2-2. Robert Gherson started for the Sting and was the game’ s Ranson 1st star stopping 37 of 39 shots. Brad Richrdson of the Attack was the 2nd star and David Pszenyczny the Ranson 3rd star. The Sting were 0 for 5 on the power play while Owen Sound was 0 for 6.
