Sting Welcome 16 New Faces to Sting Nation Following 2021 OHL Priority Selection

The two-day 2021 OHL Priority Selection presented by Real Canadian Superstore wrapped up yesterday as the Sarnia Sting added 16 prospects through 15 rounds of the Draft. Unlike previous seasons where Draft positions have normally been based upon the reverse order of the overall regular season standings, the first-ever OHL Draft Lottery was held on Wednesday, May 5 to determine where each team’s first-round selection fell. Through this process, the Sting were awarded the 13th overall selection, with picks in the subsequent fourteen rounds following a serpentine arrangement where the first-round selection order was reversed for even-numbered rounds.
Day One Draft Picks
Round 1, Pick 13: Angus MacDonell
With the Sting’s first selection of the Draft, the Sting selected 5’10” centerman Angus MacDonell from Toronto, Ontario. During the 2019-20 season, MacDonell captained the Toronto Marlboros U15 AAA team with whom he recorded 23 goals and 9 assists in 27 games.
On what MacDonell brings to the Sting, General Manager Dylan Seca comments, “We are extremely happy and excited to have Angus join our organization. He is a player that we targeted in this Draft. He has a high-end compete level combined with excellent character and leadership. We see a skilled, two-way centre that our fans in Sarnia will really enjoy watching on the ice.”

When describing what the moment he heard his name called by the Sting was like MacDonell explained, “I had a couple of my cousins and aunts and uncles over last night just in the backyard, so they went pretty crazy. It was pretty awesome…”
Round 2, Pick 30: Ben Lalkin
With their second-round selection, previously acquired from the Erie Otters, the Sting were pleased to add forward Ben Lalkin at 30th overall. Lalkin, tallied 34 goals and 15 assists for 49 points in just 18 games with his hometown Mississauga U15 Reps during the 2019-20 season.
“Ben is a highly competitive, skilled forward who loves to score goals. He is a great teammate and a player we feel can play in all positions. We are thrilled he was still available with our pick in the second round,” comments Director of Player Evaluation Mark Filippone.

Round 3, Pick 52: Alexis Daviault
With the Sting’s final selection on day one of the 2021 OHL Priority Selection, the club added defenceman Alexis Daviault to the roster. The 5’11” Ottawa native finished the 2019-20 season with 11 goals and 6 assists in 28 games with the Eastern Ontario Wild. Alexis is a strong skating defender and is determined to make an impression on the ice this season
Kyle Craner Director of Player Personnel adds, “Alexis is without a doubt one of the best skating defenceman in the draft. He has great puck skills, his mobility is outstanding, and we love his ability and skill set to play on the powerplay.”

Day One Activities
Following Day One of the Draft, Jacob Perreault, Max Namestnikov, Ben Gaudreau, and Brayden Guy met virtually with the first three selections to welcome them to the Hockey Club.
Sharing his advice for the new recruits, fifth year forward Guy stated, “I remember being in your situation when I was your age and now going into my fifth year I look back and say don’t take anything for granted and it goes by fast…so soak it all in and enjoy it”.
Each returning player emphasized the relationships and bond between teammates that joining the Sting offers as Jacob Perreault said “we are really excited to have you. You guys are going to have a lot of fun in Sarnia. You make friendships that you’ll keep for a long time”. This sentiment was echoed by Gaudreau who explained that “Sarnia has a great team dynamic, and you’ll make friends here that will las the rest of your lives.” as well as Namestnikov who said that “our team is awesome, we have been spending a lot of time together on Zoom calls. It will be fun.”
Finally, the returning players expressed their excitement to get back to Sarnia, welcome the new draft choices to the team in person, and begin preparations for the 2021-2022 hockey season. Perreault stated, “We’re really excited to get things started and see you guys at main camp” with Gaudreau adding “congrats and I can’t wait to meet you guys” before Guy explained that “this kind of feels like there is a little bit more normalcy coming back so I’m really looking forward to meeting you and seeing what we can do here in the next year.”

Day Two Draft Picks
Round 4, Pick 71: Ethan Tierman
Day two of the OHL Priority Selection kicked off with the Sting using the 71st pick, acquired via trade with the Mississauga Steelheads, to add 5’10” left shooting forward Ethan Tierman from the Mississauga Rebels U16 AAA team. During the 2019-2020 hockey season, Tierman is another forward that the Sting sought after with a strong skill set and high compete level.

Round 5, Pick 92: Gabriel Perreault
With their fifth-round pick, the Sting selected Gabriel Perreault from Hinsdale, Illinois at 92nd overall. The offensively gifted, 5’10” left shot forward recorded 40 points with the Chicago Mission and follows in the footsteps of his brother, Jacob Perreault, who was selected by the Sting in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection Draft.

Round 6, Pick 107: Brayden Degelas
The Sting added right shot, 6’2” forward Brayden Degelas from Blenheim, Ontario with their sixth-round selection. During the 2019-20 season, Degelas recorded 20 goals and 33 assists for 53 points in just 32 games with the Chatham-Kent Cyclones in the Alliance U15 league.

Round 7, Pick 132: Owen Thomas
With the Sting’s fourth pick on day two of the Draft, the team added 6’2” defenseman Owen Thomas of the Notre Dame Hounds. Last season, the native of Chicago, Illinois recorded 1 goal and 6 assists in 6 games at the U16 level, while posting the same stats in just 4 games of U18 competition.

Round 8, Pick 147: Connor Brown
5’9” right shooting centreman Connor Brown was selected with the Sting’s eighth round selection. Born in Estero, Florida, Brown spent the previous season playing for the Florida Alliance 15U AAA hockey club. Brown, plays a complete 200 foot game comes off a strong showing at the recent US Nationals.

Round 9, Pick 161: William Bray
The Sting’s first selection of the ninth round, previously held by the Oshawa Generals, was left shot defenceman William Bray from Niagara-on-the-Lake. Standing at 5’9”, Bray spent the 2019-20 with the Mississauga Reps U16 AAA with whom he scored 5 goals and 9 points in 15 games.

Round 9, Pick 172: Easton Wainwright
With the Sting’s second selection of the ninth round the team selected Mount Hope, Ontario native centreman Easton Wainwright from the Hamilton Jr. Bulldogs of the SCTA. During his 37 game 2019-20 season with the Bulldogs, Wainwright impressively tallied 19 goals and 13 assists.

Round 10, Pick 187: Tanner Walos
In the tenth round the Sting selected talented goal scorer Tanner Walos of the Milwaukee Jr. Admirals 15U AAA team. Walos, a 5’10” centreman from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin, recorded an impressive 55 goals and 22 assists for 77 points in 59 games through the 2020-21 hockey season including 14 goals in 11 games which won him the scoring title in the Tier 1 Elite Hockey League.

Round 11, Pick 204: Jaxon Priddle
The Sting were pleased to select hometown prospect Jaxon Priddle with their eleventh-round pick, previously acquired from the Kingston Frontenacs on September 7, 2018. The 6’0” left winger has been an active member of the Lambton JR. Sting AAA over the last few years and was very excited to have been selected by Sarnia as he explained that “It’s an awesome feeling.” During the 2019-20 season, Priddle scored 18 goals and 4 assists through 30 games with Lambton.

Round 12, Pick 227: Stone Rolston
With their 227th pick in the OHL Priority Selection, the Sting chose right winger Stone Rolston from Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Rolston, who stands at 6’3”, played his most recent season with the Detroit Little Caesars 15’s. Stone comes from a strong hockey pedigree as evident in his skill level and a strong hockey IQ.

Round 14, Pick 267: Taya Currie
The Sting made history with their pick in the 14th round, selecting goaltender Taya Currie from Parkhill, Ontario as she became the first female hockey player to ever be selected in the OHL Priority Selection. Currie played her most recent season with the Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs U16 AAA team and drew the attention of scouts due to her quickness, competitiveness, and determination. Currie has been a proven winner throughout her minor hockey career backstopping a very successful Chiefs team.

Round 15, Pick 282: Paul Alexander
With their first selection in the final round, the Sting used the 282nd pick originating from the Guelph Storm to select centreman Paul Alexander from Richmond Hill, Ontario, Alexander, who stands at 5’11”, spent his last season with the Markham Waxers U16 AAA team. During the 2019-20 season at the U15 level, Alexander tallied 12 goals and 25 assists in 43 games played.

With their final selection of the 2021 OHL Draft, the Sting selected goaltender Antonino Rizzo from Bolton, Ontario. Rizzo comes from the Mississauga Rebels U16 AAA team. Sting Goaltending Instructor Franky Palazzese is extremely pleased with the selections of Currie and Rizzo adding to the organization’s goaltending depth.
