Sting Force Game Six Monday
The Sting recorded their second consecutive shutout on home ice at the SSEC on Saturday night blanking the Storm 3-0 on a 44 save performance by veteran goaltender Robert Gherson.
Gherson who started for the first time since game one in the series was outstanding stopping several point blank opportunities.
The Sting offence also played a major part in the game when Sting inspirational leader Kris Newbury got the ball rolling when his wrist shot beat Storm goaltender Andrew Penner for the 1-0 lead at 10:16 of the first. The Sting would then take a 2-0 lead when rookie defenceman Steve Ward who due to injury was playing forward jammed his first career OHL goal past Penner at the 17 minute mark to give the Sting a 2-0 lead heading into the second.
The second period was all Gherson who stopped all 17 Storm shots fired his way in the period as the teams saw the 2-0 score go into the third.
The Sting powerplay connected to salt the game away when sophomore forward Danny Fritsche ripped a one time pass from Newbury home at 2:40 of the third for the final tallie of the night.
The Sting now head to Guelph Monday to face the Storm looking to force a game seven back at the SSEC on Tuesday.
