STING DEFEAT BULLS 5 -3
The Sting keep on rolling along. The Belleville Bulls played the first game of their western raod swing against the Sting last night in Sarnia and were defeated by a score of 5-3. The Sting were led by Kris Newbury who had a 4 point night, including 2 goals and 2 assists. The game was a tight battle between the two clubs. The Sting opened the scoring in the first at the 4:23 mark on Newbury’s first goal of the night, his 28th on the year. The Bulls would tie it four minutes later on Mike Knights goal, his fourth. The first period would end 1-1. Both goals were even strength goals.
Newbury would add his second of the game to make it 2-1 Sarnia just a minute and forty seconds into the second. Danny Fritsche would give the Sting a 2 goal cushion at 5:46 of the second to make it 3-1. The score would remain 3-1 until a minute and a half to go when the Bulls would close the gap when Cody McCormick notched his 30th to make it 3-2.
In the third, both teams had some great scoring chances and battled back and fourth until 14:37 of the third, on an odd man rush, Kris Newbury fed Joey Tenute with a pass going to the net and Tenute tipped it passed Bull’s netminder Michael Mole to give the Sting a two goal lead at 4-2 and what looked to be the cushion they needed again. But the Bulls didn’t give up. Just 19 seconds later, the Bulls would rush down the ice on the face-off and Steve Cooke would make it 4-3. The Bulls would pull Mole late in the third for the extra attacker but Tenute would deposit his second of the night, an empty net goal to seal it for the Sting. Both teams were scoreless on the power play. Only 7 penalties were called by referee Ryan O’Neil.
Robert Gherson got the win for the Sting, Mole the loss. Newbury was the games Ranson first star, Fritsche the second and Mole the third. The game took 2 hours and twenty one minutes to play before the smallest crowd of the year at the SSEC, 3804 fans.
The Sting travel to Guelph to take on the Storm tonight. Game time is 7:30pm and can be heard on radio 1070 CHOK with George Heath and Murray Vosbourgh.
