Sting Clinch 3rd in Western Conference, Break Franchise Record
The Sarnia Sting set a new franchise mark for points in a season (84) and in the process have clinched the third spot in the Western Conference heading into the playoffs.
The Sting took an early lead in Saginaw Tuesday night when Reg Thomas (8) scored on the power play 6:12 into the 1st period.
The Sting scored another single goal in the second period when Danny Fritsche (29) beat Saginaw goaltender Mike Brown just 19 seconds into the 2nd period.
The Sting then put the game away in the third scoring another goal in the first minute of a period when Kris Newbury (33) scored 33 seconds into the third.
Anthony Butera (3) and Danny Fritsche (30) rounded out the Sting scoring for the 5-0 final.
Sting goaltender Robert Gherson turned aside 31 shots for the shutout his third of the season and the team’s 5th this year.
The win was the Sting’s 38th on the season moving them 1 away from tying the franchise mark in wins.
Sting forward Danny Fritsche joined Joey Tenute and Kris Newbury in the 30 goal club.
