Misa Scores Twice As Saginaw Beats Sarnia 6-1
By Carl Chimenti
Michael Misa scored two third period goals to break open what had been a close game and the Saginaw Spirit handed Sarnia their first loss of the season beating the Sting 6-1, Saturday night, at the Dow Event Center.
Misa scored his OHL leading 6th and 7th goals of the season, (in just three games), back to back, in the final period at 13:50 and 19:04 and was selected as the first star of the game.
Sarnia was coming on with a number of scoring chances, including hitting a pair of goal posts in a tight 3-1 affair mid-way through the third period. Kaeden Johnston scored his third of the season to put Sarnia up 1-0, which they maintained for most of the opening period. Evan Maillett made his first career OHL start and played very well, keeping the Sting in the game. He faced 44 shots in total and turned away 38 of those. Andrew Oke stopped all but one of the 25 shots he faced in net for the Spirit.
Both Ethan Hay and Lincoln Moore had a goal and an assist. Carson Harmer picked up two helpers for the Spirit. Neither team was successful on the power-play as Sarnia went 0/4 and Saginaw 0/3. The Spirit was the better team on the shot clock with a 44-25 margin. Oke was the second star and Joey Willis was named as the third star.
Sarnia will host the Saginaw Spirit in their next game, Friday evening (October 4th) at the Hive.
The first period was even as both teams scored one goal and had 8 shots apiece on net. Johnston opened the scoring, following his great three point effort, the night before, scoring his third goal of the year. Filak was exceptional on the play as he dug the puck from the side of the net and once in possession, he sent a pass to an on rushing Johnston who beat the Spirit goaltender low on the stick side at 7:53. Maillett and the Sting defense played well to keep Saginaw at bay until Liam Storch (1) tied the game late in the period at 17:54, from PJ Forgione and Harmer. Sarnia was called for a late penalty and began the second period shorthanded for the first minute. Sarnia killed off the penalty successfully. Saginaw scored the only two goals to grab a 3-1 lead after forty minutes of play. Willis (1) snapped the 1-1 tie at 5:22 from Nic Sima and Calem Mangone. The Spirit scored their second goal of the period at 14:35 as Hay scored his first of the year from Moore. Sarnia best scoring chance came in the final minute as Di Iorio hit the goal post. Di lorio than proceeded to stop a Spirit scoring play soon after in the final seconds. Misa skated in alone and Di lorio was able to pick Misa’s pocket with a nice defensive play. Saginaw out-shot Sarnia 18-10.
