Draft Day 1 Recap

The Sarnia Sting Hockey Club is proud to announce the selection of Adrian Sgro, fourth overall at the 2026 OHL Priority Selection.

The young left-shooting defenceman stands at six feet tall and 185 pounds, and was the top defenceman going into the draft. The Alliston, Ontario native is coming off a successful season with the Vaughan Kings U16 AAA team as captain. Sgro played 33 games, scoring 10 goals and 21 assists in the 2025-26 season. Sgro has played for the Kings since the 2023-24 season, moving up to the next age group each year.

The Vaughan Kings have history with Sarnia, as current Sting captain, Alessandro Di Iorio, also had a successful minor career with the team. Di Iorio played with the Kings between 2023 and 2025.

“He checks all the boxes for us,” noted General Manager Dylan Seca in an interview after the selection. Sgro’s personality and skill set are a natural fit for the Sarnia Sting. Sgro was a prominent player in the 2026 OHL Cup, leading his team through the round-robin games.

Sgro describes himself as a “complete hockey player with high hockey I.Q.,” which aligns with crucial values that Sting scouting and management look for in prospects.

After the selection, Head Coach Mathieu Turcotte said, “First and foremost, he’s a great person and a great leader, which is what we’re looking for with the Sting.” Strong character and ethics are a non-negotiable to be a member of the Sarnia Sting, and Sgro embodies these values. Turcotte also said, “He’s a player we’re extremely happy to have, and can’t wait to get him in the lineup.”

After being selected by the Sarnia Sting, Sgro said, “I’m excited to start my career in junior hockey.” He was joined by his parents, his younger sister and his extended family to celebrate the accomplishment.

The Sarnia Sting look forward to the next chapter with Sgro as an addition to the team. The organization would like to sincerely congratulate Adrian Srgo and his family on this monumental achievement.
