Academic Spotlight Series: Peter Stratis
Sarnia, ON – Sarnia Sting defenceman Peter Stratis is focusing on working hard while maintaining balance in anticipation of the Ontario Hockey League’s return to play.
The twenty-year-old defenceman for the Sting is currently enrolled at Laurentian University and taking Introduction to Music, Introduction to Indian Buddhism, and Psychology of Emotion. Currently holding an A average in these classes, Stratis speaks to why it’s important to him to continue to focus on academics.
“I think it’s important to continue taking courses while playing because it prepares you for life after hockey. Time management and dedication are important skills that are learned by taking courses while playing. It can also be a good outlet because our schedule is demanding, so it’s good to think about things other than hockey for a couple hours a day. Taking a couple courses also helps you decide what you’re interested in before you need to choose a major.”
Stratis was acquired by the Sting from the Sudbury Wolves via trade last January. In 33 games played on the Sting blue line last season, the Scarborough native tallied 2 goals and 8 assists while holding a +1 rating. Stratis reiterates that time management has been crucial to balancing school and hockey.
“It (time management) can be challenging at times. Especially during the season, it can be difficult to attend classes because our busy schedule. It has been important for me to utilize the time we have during long bus trips to get on top of schoolwork.”

Of course, COVID-19 has changed the way students are learning in school. More and more classes are taking place online and students are consistently adapting to the new systems, however Stratis says it really hasn’t been too much of an adjustment. “The transition to online learning hasn’t been too difficult for me. I’m used to taking courses online because a lot of my high school credits were done online. The most important part is knowing your deadlines and setting up a plan on your schedule.”
When asked what advice he would offer young players in the league, Stratis recommends finding balance, which means taking time away from the game as well. “It’s important to put a lot of time and effort into training and your sport, but it’s also good to have other interests and learn new things. Whether it’s taking courses, or learning how to cook, it’s good to take your mind of your sport and do other things.”
While still pursuing a career in hockey, Stratis has enjoyed taking business classes and will continue to study business related courses while balancing his training regiment.
