Steelheads Select Two Players in the 2023 CHL Import Draft
The Steelheads drafted two Czech players in the CHL Import Draft.
MISSISSAUGA, ON – The Mississauga Steelheads have selected two left-defencemen, both hailing from Czechia, in the 2023 CHL Import Draft.
With their first selection in the draft, the Steelheads selected defenceman Jakub Fibigr from Czechia at 16th overall. Selected from HC Vítkovice, the left-shot defender put up 14 points (2G, 12A) in 43 games. He has had several opportunities to play for Czechia, including at the U17 World Hockey Championships as well as the International Junior level, where he put up 6 points (2G, 4A) in 21 games.
The blueliner’s biggest assets are his skating and offensive abilities. The 2006-born player is known as a two-way defenceman who is not afraid to lead the rush and use his hard shot to score goals.
The second player coming to Mississauga is Tomas Galvas, who was picked at the 76th spot, also from Czechia. Across 44 games played for the U17 and U20 HC Olomouc teams, the left-shot defenceman tallied 37 points (6G, 31A). The blueliner spent time on both the U17 and U18 Czech teams at the International Junior level, scoring 6 assists in 17 games.
The reliable defender is credited with an advanced hockey IQ and strong skating abilities. His passing skills allows him to effectively develop plays to get pucks into the net.
“We are very happy with our two picks in this year’s Import Draft.” said Steelheads Head Coach and General Manager James Richmond. “Both Jakub and Tomas are Czech National Team players and play a very intelligent game. Great skaters and puck moving defencemen that will fit very nicely into our team. We look forward to seeing them in the Steelheads blue and white soon.”
On behalf of the Steelheads organization, we’d like to welcome Jakub, Tomas, and their families to Mississauga!
