The Steelheads Brave the Storm with Decisive 4-1 Victory
GUELPH, ON – The Steelheads squared off against the Storm in a hard-fought Friday night matchup at the Sleeman Centre.
Coming off a loss in Niagara, the Trout were eager to bounce back tonight in Guelph. With fresh legs and high energy, the Steelheads brought speed and sustained offensive pressure throughout the game.
Less than two minutes into the first period, Storm’s forward Grant Spada was assessed an interference penalty, giving the Steelheads an early power-play opportunity to which they wasted no time capitalizing on.
On the man-advantage, Keaton Ardagh broke the ice, opening the scoring just minutes into the game. Assisted by Carter Hicks and Julian DeMiglio, Ardagh found open ice and drove hard to the net. With the Storm focused on the puck carrier, Ardagh slipped into position, took the pass, and buried his ninth goal of the season.
Riding the momentum from Ardagh’s goal, the Steelheads pushed to extend their lead. They continued to dominate the ice, showcasing strong offensive pressure, quick passes, and relentless speed as they looked for opportunities.
At the other end of the ice, goaltender Zach Bowen stood tall between the pipes. Despite the Storm’s many attempts, Bowen made several key saves to shut down the Storm and prevent them from tying the game.
Nearing the end of the frame, Peter Green was sent to the box for holding, putting the Storm on the power play for the closing minutes. However, the Steelheads held strong defensively, successfully killing off the penalty. The period came to a close with the visitors holding a 1-0 lead.
The second period was a turbulent one, marked by penalties on both sides, multiple turnovers, and fast-paced back-and-forth action as each team battled to find the back of the net.
At 7:40, the Steelheads were forced to the penalty kill after Owen Cartwright was called for cross-checking. Before his penalty expired, Jaxon Williams was also sent to the box, leaving the Trout short-handed two men for 48 seconds. The Storm’s 5-on-3 advantage was short-lived, however, as Jaako Wycisk was assessed a tripping penalty, briefly shifting play to 4-on-3. Despite the flurry of penalties and advantages, neither side was able to capitalize.
At 13:55, the Steelheads broke through once again. Nathan Amidovski cut through the Storm defense and delivered a crisp pass to Julian DeMiglio in front of the net. DeMiglio made a smooth backhand-to-forehand move tucking the puck past the goaltender, extending the Steelheads’ lead to 2-0.
Late in the period, Matej Stankoven was sent to the box for hooking, giving the Storm another power-play opportunity. However, that advantage was negated when Leo Serlin was penalized, resulting in 4-on-4 play to close out the frame.
In the third period, both teams battled with urgency. The Trout were determined to seal their victory as the Storm pushed to close the gap.
At 9:14, Owen Cartwright extended the Steelheads’ lead, ripping a shot from the far side of the blue line through traffic and past the goaltender. Assisted by Julian DeMiglio and Mason Roy, Cartwright’s goal set the tone for the remainder of the period.
Less than a minute later, at 10:08, Reed Gee and Storm’s Illia Shybinskyi were sent to the box. While neither side capitalized during the 4-on-4 action, the Steelheads struck again five minutes later. DeMiglio won a faceoff in the offensive zone and quickly fed the puck to Ardagh to finish the play. Ardagh earned his second goal of the night and pushed the lead to 4-0 for the boys in white and blue.
With two minutes remaining, penalties to Sam Black and Storm forward Grant Spada were followed shortly by another infraction to Reed Gee, giving Guelph a 5-on-3 power play. The Storm capitalized on the advantage, scoring their first goal of the game.
In the end, the Steelheads braved the Storm and skated away with a decisive 4-1 victory.
