Steelheads Win OT Thriller in Ottawa
OTTAWA, ON – Brampton wrapped up its second road game in as many days this Saturday afternoon with a matchup against the Ottawa 67’s.
This marked Nathan Amidovski and Jaxon Williams’ return to Ottawa after being acquired by Brampton at the trade deadline.
The Trout generated a chance early by entering the zone and finding the open man Troy Patton in the slot but the shot was turned away. Ottawa opened up the scoring in the first.
Coming into the game, the Steelheads were the OHL’s only team yet to surrender a shorthanded goal. At 7:07, they sent their offensive squad to the powerplay after some good pressure.
The back and forth exchange went on as both teams kept the shot-counter low in the first period, despite creating space on opposite sides of the ice. Goaltender Zach Bowen continued to be a shining spotlight for the Steelheads, making key saves when called upon.
Brampton ended the first period with a great chance coming off the stick of Julian DeMiglio in front of the Ottawa net but it was turned away.
The second period saw Brampton head back to the power play within the first minute of resumed play.
Forward Jack Yates scored his first goal in his first OHL game to tie it up 1-1 for the Steelheads. He was called-up for this game.
On the penalty kill, Bowen made some miraculous saves to keep the game tied including an extended leg save.
Late in the period, off-setting penalties were handed out leaving room for some 4-on-4 action.
The third period saw Bowen making more key saves as Brampton was outshot 18 to 31 in the shots department.
Brampton were sharp defensively as the 67’s turned up the pressure in the last few minutes but the Trout did not crack. Bowen made another huge glove save in the last minute to send the game into overtime.
After a few chances against, Kieran Witkowski came buzzing down the ice and scored to win the game for the Steelheads, sealing off a phenomenal performance by Bowen.
The Brampton Steelheads return home to the CAA Centre on Friday, March 13 to host Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Night, where they will once again take on the Ottawa 67s.
