SmartStop Post Game Recap – Trout Bounce Back in Style with Statement Win Over Sudbury
BRAMPTON, ON – Determined to bounce back after a recent loss, the Trout returned home this Sunday afternoon ready to make a statement, and their matchup against Sudbury proved to be the perfect opportunity.
With the organization hosting its annual First Responders Game, fans packed the building to honour the local heroes who keep the community safe. The energy was high from puck drop as supporters rallied behind the boys in white and blue.
The game was off to a slow start, with both sides trading chances but failing to convert. Six minutes in, a penalty to Mason Zebeski put the Steelheads on the kill, but their disciplined defensive play and timely shot blocks kept the Wolves off the board.
Moments after returning to even strength, Zebeski opened the scoring for the game. Assisted by Jakub Fibigr and Troy Patton, Zebeski secured the puck, circled around the back of the net, and sniped it into the top corner.
Tensions rose late in the period, resulting in roughing penalties for Peter Green and Sudbury’s Jan Chovan, setting up some wide-open 4-on-4 action. But just when it looked like the Trout would escape the period with the lead, Sudbury’s Chase Coughlan buried one with 1.4 seconds remaining, sending the teams into intermission tied 1-1.
Onto the second period, the Steelheads hit the ice with clean skates and determination to take the lead early into the period. Three minutes later, their efforts were rewarded. Assisted by Kieran Witkowski, Ty Daniels scored his career first OHL goal by burying a shot from the slot area.
Halfway through the period, William Eggleton crossed to Troy Patton who hammered one home, scoring his fifth goal of the season, and extending the Steelheads’ lead 3-1.
The rest of the period was filled with fast-paced playing, strategic offensive playmaking, forceful defense, and a handful of penalties given out on both sides as each team battled to control momentum.
Sudbury finally responded in the final minutes of the period when Kieron Walton cut the deficit to 3-2, setting up a tight third period.
The final frame began with the Trout killing off the last seconds of a carry-over penalty, which they managed with composure. After Sudbury took a high-sticking penalty, the Steelheads went on the power play. While they were unable to convert at first, once the power play was over, the Steelheads gained momentum.
To kick off the scoring spree, Peter Green fired home his first OHL goal – one of two first-time OHL scorers of the night. After a brief review, the goal was confirmed, sending the arena into celebration.
Less than a minute later, Fibigr ripped home a power-play goal to extend the lead to 5-2. Two minutes after that, while the Wolves were on the power play, Witkowski set up Gabriel Chiarot for a short-handed breakaway goal.
The Trout took a brief scoring pause before ramping up once again. With five minutes left, Eggleton connected with Julian Demiglio in the blue paint, and Demiglio buried it to make it 7-2. Then, to cap off the night, Fibigr netted his second of the game, sealing a commanding 8-2 victory for the Steelheads.
The Trout will hit the road on Wednesday, November 26th, looking to build on their momentum as they take on the Erie Otters at 7:00 p.m.
