SmartStop Post-Game Recap – Steelheads Tame the Greyhounds
The Mississauga Steelheads secured a resounding 6-3 victory over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in a gripping encounter on Friday night at the GFL Memorial Gardens.
Angus MacDonell’s game-winning goal, coupled with Jack Van Volsen’s two-goal showcase, played pivotal roles in the Steelheads’ triumph. Ryerson’s impressive goaltending, marked by 37 saves, further solidified the team’s victory, underscoring a well-rounded team performance.
The Greyhounds grabbed an early lead, netting a shorthanded goal within the first three minutes. Bryce McConnell-Barker slipped through the defense and bested goaltender Leenders, putting the first goal on the board.
At 11:33, Angus MacDonell delivered a beautiful tape to tape pass to Van Volsen, who beat Landon Miller to find the back of the net, bringing the score to an even 1-1.
With just two minutes remaining in the first period, Jacob Frasca positioned on the left side of the ice and fired a decisive shot into the net, pushing the Greyhounds into the lead with a 2-1 score.
In the second period, the Steelheads flipped the momentum of the game, showcasing their dominance by netting two back-to-back goals within a mere 13 seconds. At the 9:42 mark, Luke Misa provided an outstanding assist to Adam Zidlicky, who executed a beautiful back-hand shot to score, bringing the game to an even 2-2.
Just 13 seconds later, Jakub Fibigr delivered a pinpoint pass straight to MacDonell, who positioned himself on the right side of the net and scored, propelling the Steelheads into a 3-2 lead.
With just two minutes remaining in the second period, MacDonell delivered a game winning goal. Positioned between the goaltender’s legs, he unleashed a precise shot, finding the back of the net for his second of the night and extending the Steelheads lead to 4-2.
With the Steelheads already leading in the third period, Karmiris delivered a crucial assist to Van Volsen, who capitalized with his second goal of the game. Subsequently, seizing another opportunity, Zidlicky capitalized by scoring an empty net goal, extending the lead by 6-2.
In the game’s closing minutes, the Greyhounds launched a final powerplay push to stage a comeback. With just two minutes left on the clock and the support of Bryce McConnell-Barker, Gavin Hayes netted the game’s final goal.
An exceptional team effort paved the way for the Steelheads to secure this well-earned victory.
