SmartStop Post-Game Recap – Steelheads Struggle in Sudbury
SUDBURY, ON – The Mississauga Steelheads struggle defensively as they fell 6-3 to the Sudbury Wolves on Sunday afternoon.
After a strong first period, the Steelheads (24-20-4-0) could not stop the Sudbury attack, giving up three goals in the third period after finishing the second tied at three.
Marc Boudreau opened the scoring for Mississauga, and Finn Harding and Jakub Fibigr added goals in the losing effort. Luke Misa had two assists, while Ryerson Leenders made 34 saves.
The Wolves (27-15-3-2) capitalized on four point outings from Landon McCallum and Zacharie Giroux. Ryan Pryce, Alex Pharand, Kocha Delic and Nathan Villeneuve also scored. Goaltender Jakub Vondras made 23 saves in the win.
The Steelheads opened the scoring halfway through the first period when a Liam Spencer shot rang off the post, starting a scramble in front that ended in Boudreau’s 10th of the season.
Two minutes later, the Steelheads capitalized on sustained zone pressure when Misa dug a puck out of the corner and set up Harding, who crept down from the point and fired a shot past Vondras to double the Steelhead lead.
Sudbury got one back 30 seconds later, when a seeing-eye point shot from Pryce found its way through multiple bodies and snuck past Leenders to cut the Steelhead lead in half.
With 5:40 gone in the second period, Giroux drove into the offensive zone with speed and made a great pass to the driving McCallum, who finished in front to tie the game.
Another three on two zone entry burns the Steelheads, when a Giroux shot deflected off the post and ricocheted in off Pharand in front. The third Sudbury marker came with five minutes remaining in the second period.
The Steelheads equalized with less than two minutes remaining in the frame, when a Fibigr point shot off a won faceoff deflected off a few bodies in front and found its way into the back of the net.
Sudbury took the lead again early in the third period when Giroux took the offensive zone again and fired a shot on net, which was saved by Leenders but deflected right to Pharand, who slid home his second of the game for the Wolves.
The Wolves doubled their lead two minutes later, when a rush chance was stopped but David Goyette took the rebound and found Delic alone in front, who put the puck past a sprawling Leenders to make the game 5-3.
Sudbury made it 6-3 with five minutes remaining, after a point shot from Villeneuve made it past Leenders, with Goyette sprawled on top of him. Initially waved off, the call was overturned upon review.
Porter Martone had a late power play goal disallowed upon review.
